I'm delighted to see that once more Rebus is gracing our screens, I just can't understand why they haven't made a series of the Rebus books - if memory serves, this is only the 2nd televised serial. I'm also gutted that John Hannah os no longer Rebus - he was absolutely made for the role. He was utterly perfect for the role, and was superb as Rebus previously. Having said that, I think Ken Stott is superb, and would maybe have thought he was perfect for the role but for seeing John Hannah play the part. I have read every Rebus book so far & think they are superb - very clever and very funny. Rebus is the original brooding, loner of a detective who loves country music, whiskey & playing the game HIS way, even if it means breaking the rules - he is also still the best, by far. I'm very much looking forward to seeing tonight's episode, I just hope that I can cope with seeing Stott as Rebus as even when I read the books I still imagine Rebus as taking on John Hannah's form!

Blimey, that was a snore! Far too many longeurs (I don't know what that means, but most tv critics use it at some point), an entirely irrelevant lurve interest, and Ken Stott has too much of a twinkle about him to be a truly melancholic Rebus. I'm afraid my nerves remain unjangled and my nails unbitten.

And dis we really need to keep seeing Bagpipers to remind us we are in Edinburgh??

I haven't read that book, it is on my shelf waiting to be put out of its misery!!

Christmas always leaves me with lots of books to catch up on. I have John Peel's "autobiography" to read as well as plenty of others. Time for a holiday I think.....

You have to wonder why they bought the rights to the book on which last night's story was based - and then rewrote the plot...
Thank you Brian - I was totally & utterly disappointed with the programme too. Strange, because the write up on the Radio Times website was very good & said that Stott made an excellent Rebus - I agree totally with Aunty K that he was too "twinkly". Not to mention too stout - Rebus is an ex-SAS inmate who although not still fit is still capable of sprinting after someone; couldn't imagine the stocky Stott having the physique for the SAS!!!

I have to admit to actually losing interest (& the plot) through out the programme as it was so far away from the book which is arguably one of the best Rebus books. I was also very much put off by the emphasis on the romance too, Kri. I also spent virtually the entire programme repeating "he's just NOT Rebus" ad nauseam! Siobhan wasn't Siobhan either - she was far too innocent & nowhere near sassy enough. Claire Goose would have been a far better choice, or that brilliant blonde Irish actress who played a DI in a recent ITV serial & was in Ballykissangel years ago.

On googling, I've discovered the Irish actress to be Victoria Smurfit - she really is good & would make an excellent Siobhan Clarke I'm sure. Well, if she put on an English accent at least, in keeping with the book!! Out of interest, is she any relation to Michael Smurfit?

Claire Goose is turning in some great performances, isn't she, Shadow? I don't know the books, but based on your own descriptions, and the previous Rebuses (Rebi?), this one just seemed very uneven and undecided about itself. Stott's a fine actor, but he's not got John Hannah's detachment. James Nesbitt would've done the part justice in lieu of Hannah, I think. (Two very lustworthy males, too, imho!)

Yes, I agree Kri - Ken Stott is a very good actor, but just not quite Rebus. I think you're spot on abotu the detachment in John Hannah - it's what Rebus is all about, he's bit of an enigma, JH does those kind fo roles well. It's funny you should mention Jimmy Nesbitt in the same breath as John Hannah - I always put the pair together as they are very similar - and yes, very pleasing on the eye!!! :D

Claire Goose is turning in a few good performances, yes - not something you'd expect from a former inmate of Holby City!

Oh, and you really should read the Rebus books Kri, they're ace! I've got them all so I'll lend them too you - get Pee to send you the omnibus of the first 3 Rebus books that I lent him!

I had an argument with my wife about the name. I say it should be pronounced Re-booo (he's half French) whareas she said it's pronounced Ree Bus. It was a good touch to cast John Hannah as the old Noble Lord slipping his daughter one. Very Gregory Peck / Cape Fear / Moby Dickish.

I should go steady on the parsnip flans, HT, they're affecting your eyesight summat awful - Sir James Hogarth was played by Richard Johnson. (He took time off to film it during the Flat season, of course.)

Now you girls are really taking the piss.

Yet again, tonight's episode, 'Fleshmarket Close', bore no resemblance to the book Fleshmarket Close whatsoever! Why do they insist on naming each episode with one of the book titles if they aren't going to even attempt to follwo the storyline?!

I have to say I didn't even look in this time after our poor opinion of the previous one! I went with Dalziel & Pascoe, which continues tomorrow, and then a re-run of Wexford on ITV3 (which is showing the entire series).

Very disjointed and uneven again, in my opinion.

Does the author have any say in these productions?

I haven't read any of the Rebus books and after watching these programmes, I am not tempted to.
