Recommended racing themed book

I'm off to the flying legends airshow this afternoon for the weekend & want to pick up maybe an autobiography to read but have no idea which to buy,

Bearing in mind our local WH Smiths is fairly small but does have a good racing section,

Any thoughts?

I've got till around 2pm to choose

Actually I've got the seabiscuit book but have never got around to reading it, saw the film & then reading the book lost its shine

The Vincent O'Brien book without a doubt.

The book of Seabiscuit is much better than the film. One of the few books I've read twice and will read it again sometime.

The book on Northern Dancer is the only racing book I have enjoyed. Top class.

Quite enjoyed the Istabraq and Kinane books. Northern Dancer book was excellent.

The trip to smiths was a complete waste of time

I found one copy of the moscow flyer book, but it looked like it had been thrown around the shop 20 times :blink:

The rest of the shelf was taken up by formbooks & some book about betting in which there must have been thirty copies of it

So I gave up & came out with nothing!

www.directoryoftheturf.com (gives lists of bookshops specialising in racing - I see it's got Classic Racing Books of Stoke-on-Trent listed, from whom I bought quite a few when the owner used to have a stand at Uttoxeter)

All the above can locate new and secondhand books for you, and/or give locations of bookshops nearest to you. If there's a particular racing book you really want and it's out of print, most of those booksellers listed in Directory of the Turf can try to source it for you.

can back the mickfitz, northern dancer and monarchos one. the latter "horse of a different colour" is a really good book, read it at least twice so far. istabraq goes without saying too, Micheal Tanner can certainly tell a story well.

Just finishing Walliam nack's Secretariat: the making of a champion. The depth Nack goes to in telling the story of this horse (it really does read like a story, and an engrossing one at that) from every perspective - pedigree, connections, syndication as well as Secretariat's life and career from foaling to stud - is staggering really.

By far and away the best racing book I have ever read.
