Johnny Haynes, Fulham and England, has died at the age of 71, as the result of injuries sustained in a car crash.

He spent his entire career at the London club and made 56 appearances for England, became famous as the first British footballer to earn £100 per week.

Haynes, was of the most gifted playmakers England has ever produced, and played 657 times for Fulham and scored 157 goals. He also captained the national side when they beat Scotland 9-3 in the Home International Championship in 1961.

He was the first footballer to appear for England in every class of football available at the time when he represented his country at; school, youth, under 23, 'B' and full international level.

The Fulham of Haynes, Bobby Robson and Bedford Jezzard was the first league team I ever saw play as a boy and I thought that Haynes was a magician with the ball.

I go with all of that. His was one of the sought after picture cards we used to save as young boys.

Brian, he was a wonderful passer of the ball and had great vision.

The only time I saw him play in the flesh was when he was part of the team who destroyed Wales (ok, not the hardest thing to do) 4-0 at Ninian Park. Also in the England side that day was a young Duncan Edwards.

No wonder we didn't have a chance!
