Actress Shelley Winters, one of only two women to win two Best Supporting Actress Oscars, died today in Beverly Hills; she was 85.

A long and successful stage and film career (she made well over 100 films in over fifty years) saw her win her Academy Awards for her supporting rôles in "The Diary of Anne Frank" (1959) and "A Patch of Blue" (1965). One of her best known rôles was for Belle Rosen, the swimming momma lady in "The Poseidon Adventure" (1972).

I remember her well as Ruby in "Alfie" (can it really be 1966?). "She's in beautiful condition...

She once, in an unforgettable "Tonight With Johhn Carson" show got upset with Oliver Reed and walked off. Carson was a bit dumbfounded but carried on as best he could with Reed, who had, as usual, had a few drinks. Suddenly Shelley winters reappeared with a champagne bucket full of ice and water and poured it all over Ollie!

She always looked as if she lived life to the full, and was the sort of person you'd love to sit down with, with probably several drinks, and just let them loose with their anecdotes. I bet she had a few raucous ones! I loved her acting and her apparent naturalness.

Films or women?

If I were about 40 years older I might have fancied her. Your excuse is you are 40 years older.

I don't understand the comment - I doubt whether she would have been too "fanciable" at 85, so are you talking about the above picture?

If you like I can give you a few from varuious years, how are these for starters:
