FACTS & FIGURES
1. The Fred Winter Juvenile Novices’ Handicap Hurdle commemorates one of the greatest figures in the history of jump racing both as a jockey and trainer. Fred Winter, who died aged 77 in April, 2004, was champion jockey four times and rode the totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup winner twice (1961 Saffron Tartan, 1962 Mandarin) and won the Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle on three occasions as a rider (1955 Clair Soleil, 1959 Fare Time, 1961 Eborneezer). He had 17 Festival successes as a jockey. He retired from the saddle at Cheltenham's spring meeting in 1964 and went on to be champion trainer on eight occasions. He won four Champion Hurdles as a trainer (1971 and 1972 Bula, 1974 Lanzarote, 1988 Celtic Shot) and, although the Cheltenham Gold Cup proved elusive for a long while as a trainer, he finally landed the race in 1978 with Midnight Court. He saddled a total of 28 Festival winners and holds the unique feat of having been the only man to have both ridden and trained winners of the Cheltenham Gold Cup and Champion Hurdle.
2. The Fred Winter Juvenile Novices’ Handicap Hurdle was one of the new races introduced to The Festival in 2005 when it was extended to four days.
3. The inaugural running went to Dabiroun, partnered by Nina Carberry. Carberry became the second female jockey to win a Festival race other than the Christie’s Foxhunter Chase, following on from Gee Armytage.
4. David Pipe enjoyed his first Festival success in 2007 with Gaspara, who also netted a £75,000 bonus put up by bookmaker Sunderlands for any horse that landed the Sunderlands Imperial Cup and a race at The Festival.

Fred Winter Juvenile Novices’ Handicap Hurdle – Analysis
This year’s Fred Winter Juvenile Novices’ Handicap Hurdle has attracted a superb entry of 60, three more than in 2009. The extended two-mile contest, a valuable handicap alternative to the JCB Triumph Hurdle, is the penultimate race on the second day of The Festival, Wednesday, March 17.
Pistolet Noir looked set to be one of the leading players on the juvenile scene when beating Barizan by nine lengths in the Grade Two Prestbury Juvenile Novices’ Hurdle at The Open in November. The Maille Pistol gelding joined Paul Nicholls shortly after that race and may bid to avenge a two-length reversal at the hands of Baccalaureate in the Grade Two Betfair Finesse
Juvenile Novices’ Hurdle on Festival Trials Day.
Westlin’ Winds also produced one of the leading performances of the season when romping to victory under a penalty at Plumpton, while Ultimate took a Huntingdon juvenile novices’ hurdle by 22 lengths prior to taking fourth behind Olofi, George Nympton and Bocamix in the Cheltenham Military Charity Ball Juvenile Novices’ Hurdle at the Boylesports International in December.
David Pipe celebrated a first Festival success in this race with Gaspara in 2007 and the Pond House handler has this year entered comprehensive Plumpton victor Notus De La Tour, who races in the colours of Racing For Change, and Warwick scorer Hunterview.
Recent Sandown winner Open Day may represent Jonjo O’Neill and his landlord J P McManus, while the Alison Thorpe-trained Diktalina also won at the Esher course before finding only Grade One winner Me Voice nine lengths too strong at Haydock.
Other notable entries include Bothy, who is unbeaten in three starts, easy Wincanton winner Rougham, Ffos Las victor Barwell Bridge and the Gary Moore-trained Orzare, who won a Plumpton juvenile novices’ hurdle by 19 lengths on February 15.
The 10 Irish-trained entries include Loch Long and Shanrod, who took second and third respectively in the Grade Two Winning Fair Juvenile Hurdle at Fairyhouse in January, and Grade Three runner-up Doctor Deejay, representing Irish champion trainer Willie Mullins.
