FULKE WALWYN KIM MUIR CHALLENGE CUP HANDICAP CHASE – Analysis
The handicap for amateur riders staged over an extended three miles, one furlong, has 101 entries, including 15 trained in Ireland. Donald McCain saddled Cloudy Lane to victory in 2007 and has entered the progressive Ballabriggs, winner of his last two starts, as well as the recent Bangor novice chase victor Khachaturian.
Ferdy Murphy has engaged Poker De Sivola and Servo Trophy Handicap Chase victor Galant Nuit in a bid to clinch a third success in the race (2006 You’re Special, 1996 Stop The Waller).
Nicky Henderson (1990 Master Bob, 2002 The Bushkeeper, 2005 Juveigneur) is after a fourth victory and has seven entries including 2005 RSA Chase winner Trabolgan and useful novices Wogan and Polyfast.
Grand National hope Palypso De Creek and stablemate Far More Serious could represent Charlie Longsdon, while trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies’ quintet includes Scottish Grand National hero Hello Bud and Topham Chase winner Irish Raptor.
David Pipe has entered The Sliotar, Faasel, Fred’s Benefit and Over The Creek, while Jonjo O’Neill’s quintet is headed by last season’s Jewson Novices’ Handicap Chase winner Isn’t That Lucky and Summer Plate winner Nostringsattached. Philip Hobbs has engaged Parsons Legacy, runner-up in this race in 2007, among five entries.
Others of note include the Colin Tizzard-trained pair of Flight Leader and Bob Bob Bobbin, as well as the Jamie Poulton-trained Ballyfoy, who defied top-weight to defeat the Venetia Williams trained Ma Yahab at Lingfield in January.
No Irish-trained horse has triumphed since the Michael Cunningham-trained Greasepaint in 1983 but the same trainer has entered Piano Star, winner of a valuable handicap chase at Kilbeggan in July.
The Tom Taaffe-trained Finger Onthe Pulse landed the 2008 Jewson Novices’ Handicap Chase, while Lochan Lacha from the Tony Martin yard was fourth in the Thyestes Chase at Gowran in January.
Grade One winner In Compliance was fifth to Joncol in the Hennessy at Leopardstown in January, while his Dessie Hughes-trained stablemate Siegemaster was third in the Thyestes.
Chelsea Harbour could represent Tom Mullins, while Willie Mullins has entered Pomme Tiepy and Noel Meade has engaged the smart Parsons Pistol.

1. The Kim Muir Amateur Riders’ Steeplechase was introduced to the National Hunt Meeting in 1946 by Mrs Evan Williams, sister of Kim Muir, a young cavalry officer who lost his life in the early years of the Second World War.
2. The addition of Fulke Walwyn to the title of the race occurred in 1991, reflecting the career of Cheltenham's most successful trainer. Walwyn trained 211 winners at Cheltenham and a record 40 at The Festival - his haul included four Gold Cups, two Champion Hurdles and seven Cathcart Challenge Cups.
3. Cool Ground is the only horse to have progressed from this race to a totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup victory.
4. Most of the top amateur riders appear in the winners’ list, including some subsequently well-known professional jockeys and trainers. Gay Kindersley, John Oaksey, Nick Gaselee, Roger Charlton, Michael Dickinson, Ridley Lamb, Ted Walsh, Jim Wilson, Simon Sherwood, Gee and Marcus Armytage, Robert Thornton, Adrian Maguire, Seamus Durack, Ken Whelan, David Crosse and Robert Walford are among the familiar names.
