THE PERTEMPS FINAL (HANDICAP HURDLE) - ANALYSIS
Kayf Aramis won the 2009 running of the three-mile handicap hurdle and the eight-year-old, now trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies, is among 85 entries. The trainer has also engaged Ballyfitz who landed the 2008 Pertemps Final, Petitfour, South
O’The Border and 2004 JCB Triumph Hurdle winner Made In Japan.
Mr Thriller from the David Pipe yard saw off Golan Way to win a Listed hurdle at Chepstow in October but had been behind the Mick Quinlan-trained Silk Affair when sixth to that victorious rival in the Fred Winter Juvenile Novices’ Handicap Hurdle at the 2009 Festival. Pipe’s entry also includes last year’s runner-up Buena Vista and top-class chaser Our Vic.
The Peter Bowen-trained Souffleur saw off Kayf Aramis to land a Grade Two at Haydock last time. Trenchant, trained by Alan King won a Pertemps Handicap Hurdle qualifier at Kempton in November, while the Nicky Henderson-trained Andytown carried off the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle at last year’s Festival.
Henderson’s entry also includes the useful trio of Ainama, Erzen and Fairyland, while Venetia Williams, who saddled Kayf Aramis last year, could rely on Chief Yeoman.
Alfie Sherrin, third to Mr Thriller at Chepstow, saw off the Philip Hobbs-trained Triggerman to land the spoils at Newbury on February 13, and is one of three Paul Nicholls-trained entries alongside Elusive Dream and Special Occasion. The Hobbs quartet also includes Wetherby Grade Two winner Fair Along.
Jonjo O’Neill has engaged Don’t Push It, while the Ian Williams-trained Fredo saw off Chamirey from the King yard to win at Haydock last time. Among the 14 Irish-trained entries are Time Electric from the Tom Mullins stable, the Tony Martin-trained Green Mile, the Michael O’Hare-trained Montana Slim, and the Tom Taaffe-trained Smoking Aces, who held the Charlie Swan-trained Boulavogue when winning at Punchestown on February 17.

FACTS AND FIGURES
1. The Pertemps Final (Handicap Hurdle) was introduced to The Festival in 1974, replacing the George Duller Handicap Hurdle. Until 1993, it was run under the Coral banner. Other sponsors since then have been American Express (1993), Hamlet Cigars (1994 & 1996), Astec Vodafone (1995), Hamlet Extra Mild Cigars (1997), Unicoin Homes (1998) and Stakis Casinos (1999).
Ladbrokes inherited sponsorship in 2000 after acquiring Stakis Casinos and Pertemps took over in 2002.
2. The Pertemps Final (Handicap Hurdle) is the final of the Pertemps series. Nine qualifiers have been scheduled this season at Cheltenham (October 16), Kempton Park (November 2), Auteuill (November 8), Newbury (November 27), Sandown Park (December 5), Wincanton (December 26), Leopardstown (January 10), Warwick (January 16) and Haydock Park (February 13).
3. The smallest field was 17 in 1976 when Good Prospect won at 10/1.
4. Willie Wumpkins won in three consecutive years from 1979-81 when 11,12 &13. He died in 1995 at the ripe old age of 27.
5. Forgive ’N’ Forget is the only totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup winner to have won what is now the Pertemps Final, beating 22 rivals in 1983 and going on to take the Gold Cup two years later.
6. There have been two 50/1 winners in the past six years, with Creon in 2004 and Kadoun in 2006 scoring for the bookies.
