Right you good people, I know that there are plenty of well-travelled folk on here as well as those living in Mainland Europe so I am after some advice/thoughts/ideas.

A friend and I (whilst slightly under the influence) decided that it would be a good idea to see a bit of Europe this year and so came up with the plan on travelling through the continent, generally having a good time along the way. We have both booked the last week of September and the first week of October off work and come up with a highly detailed plan (hah! - see below) and just have a few loose ends to tie up. This is where you people come in - any advice is appreciated:

The plan initially involved flying to some far-flung eastern European state, but this has been shelved until next year, so here it is:

- Either, fly, train, hire car or motor home (hired) across Western Europe.

MAIN OBJECTIVES – To be achieved

Friend – Spend a few days somewhere where it is still hot enough to catch some rays – probably southern Spain – e.g. Malaga, Almeria, Murcia

Me – Attend the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in Paris (The middle weekend)

SECONDARY OBJECTIVES – Not essential but seem like a good idea
- Visit Barcelona
- Visit Monaco
- Visit Italy
- Do an Italian Job-style escape from Italy over the Alps.
- Visit a friend in Holland (least essential – he was over here last week!)

As you can see the plan is nearly finished, just got to pay for it and go!

BUDGET

Not a lot, the spontaneous nature of this trip mean that neither of us has had time to save up a lot of cash. But looking at between £500 - £1000 each.

METHOD

1. First idea was to fly to Southern Spain, then use trains to complete the journey, staying in Hotels and Hostels. Pros: Easy. Cons: Expensive and have to carry all luggage on Trains, in Taxis etc.

2. Fly to Southern Spain, Hire a car, Drive to Holland, foot passenger ferry or fly back to UK. Pros: More freedom than trains, escape from Italy would be possible and fun. Cons: Expensive – no rental company like one-way rentals (massive fines – one quote was over £1000 for a Renault Clio!) and this would blow most of the accommodation budget.

3. Fly to Malaga, hire a Motorhome, drive the route, but return to Barcelona to drop of the Motorhome (I have found a company who will hire us the van, let us take it out of the country without extra charge, but specify that it has to be return to one of their Spanish depots – Approx cost €1000-1500 + diesel). Pros: Not much more expensive than car, plus no accommodation costs. Freedom. Cons: Lower fuel economy, have to start and finish in Spain (albeit at the other end if we want). Escape from Italy won’t be as rapid (and could potentially be quite scary).

4. Some other way…

On the kind of budget that we are looking at, option three is looking the best. What do you think? Are there any laws in France/Spain/Italy that would prevent us from sleeping by the roadside in laybys or would we have to use campsites? What about drunk in possession of a vehicle (obviously not driving but on a night I wish to sample the local wine produce)? Has anyone done anything like this before – Lessons Learned? Is it even possible?

Any thoughts are appreciated.

I have been called worse!

Can't see us getting more than £2k (max) together in the next 6 weeks unfortunately.

The above has an all inclusive cost (insurance etc.) of €1130 (£750ish) if picked up in Malaga on the Monday and returned to Barcelona the following Wednesday.

I didn't mean to sound patronising Bets - if I did sorry. I suggest you narrow your canvas - make sure you eliminate stress and over anxiety.

Barelona - Catalonia - Arc - would be a great 2 weeks.

No offence taken AC. I suggest you are probably right. A slimmed-down version may be the way forward.

go via ferry to Bilbao from Portsmouth and try this or widen it depending on the time taken??? BE A FEW TOLLS TO PAY AS WELL......

MERLINS TOURS............ :o

Cheers Merlin, I have been doing something similar all day at work!

We are working on a third musketeer, so hopefully costs will be divided further.

I don't know about the administrative implications - but it might be worth considering flying to your first stop then buying a cheap second hand car\van, do your travelling, sell or abandon the car\van and get a cheap flight home. I used to know someone that did this a long time ago. Not sure if it's still practical.

You can't buy a car in Spain unless you have your NIE number, something which is not the easiest to obtain! You have to provide proof you have a permanent address in Spain, for starters.

Of course if you're looking for another way via ferry you can catch the ferry to Santander, just along the coast from Bilbao.

Another thought if you wish to fly to Spain is to fly Ryanair to Jerez (south of Sevilla, north of Cádiz) from Stanstead - these flights are ridiculously cheap. Jerez is a lovely place & Sevilla (IMO the most beautiful place I have ever been) is less than an hour's drive away. It is also exceptionally hot, by September time it will still be very warm. There are also very goo drail links from Sevilla to places like Málaga or Algeciras; the rail network in Andalucia is somewhat bizarre & the majority of the routes run from North to South so it can be tricky getting about on a train. From Algeciras the trains to Madrid are regular & very, very good - you can take the overnight train or a faster train (takes about 5-6 hrs I think it was from memory), the scenery is fantastic as it takes you through Ronda & it is cheap, too. You can probably get trains from Sevilla & Málaga to Madrid quite easily too but I'm not so sure - I've taken the Algeciras-Madrid train & it was very good.

Here's a link to the train/bus timetables online, but they are only from Algeciras & the surrounding area. It's a good site that I often use for transport times - it's all in Spanish though!

El Estrecho Transport Information

Another thought is that if you are considering hiring a car in Spain I can recommend CarJet very highly - I have used them on many occasions & they are reliable, widespread & cheap. Their cars are all pretty new, they change their fleet on a fairly regular basis & I have often found myself with a brand new car, or a larger car than I had paid for.

No problems at all Betsmate. If you are planning to 'do' Andalucia you could do a lot worse than to get hold of The Rough Guide To Andalucia, it is a very good book & very informative. Another one which is very good is The Southern Spain Insight Guide - both widely available & containing some very useful information. WHSmiths were doing a "3 for 2" on travel guides a couple of weeks ago, might be worth checking out.

Also, I believe Ryanair have a sale on at the moment - when I say flights to Jerez are cheap I mean they are dirt cheap - a colleague was telling me a couple of days ago that flights started at something ridiculous like €5. I flew Ryanair from Jerez last year & it cost me €49 return including all charges & taxes.
