Newmarket Gallop Reports

Issue 24

Tuesday 10th June

Henry Cecil – Limekilns

Henry put some of his serious Ascot types through their paces ahead of next weeks Royal meeting and several were out to impress.

PHOENIX TOWER (Ted Durcan) confirmed his place in the Prince Of Wales Stakes with an emphatic workout over 7f with Newbury winner Tranquil Tiger. The later named led at a strong gallop making sure it was a true test but Phoenix Tower looked in a completely different postcode as he loomed up under Durcan full of running. Asked the quicken the response was both immediate and impressive as he powered a comfortable 5l clear of his 116 rated companion. Phoenix Tower is starting to look something out of the ordinary and the faster the ground the better for this son of Chester House. The step up in trip is what he needs and he looks a strong bet next Wednesday.

Twice Over who disappointed coming home 3rd of 3 in a gallop on Saturday confirmed he was back in form stretching on from consistent handicapper Many Volumes. Doing a good piece of work over 7f the Dante flop looked well within himself going the better of the pair.

Rattan (Tom Queally) who drew on from the 100 rated colts on Friday morning was given a nice blowout over 7f this morning with dual handicap winner Ajaan over 7f. The 5l Newmarket winner skipped along in good style moving effortlessly alongsides his lead horse. He looks capable of going onto big things and if he lines up in the Britannia he would have to rate a serious bet.

Peter Chapple-Hyam – Limekilns

The St Gatien handler was keen to put a couple of his serious Ascot prospects through their paces again this morning with a main workout for Queen Anne hope Tariq topping his strings workouts.

Aeroplane has never been one to read the script and he is a frustrating horse as he never seems to put his fantastic work at home onto the racetrack. The Danehill Dancer full horse however shouldn’t be written off when he contests the Golden Jubilee next weekend after another cracking piece of work. Leading Queen Anne hopeful Tariq (Adrian McCarthy) over 6f the pair went a good gallop and every time Tariq pressed his companion, he dug out more. Aeroplane was 3rd at Haydock in a good race last time and in fairness to him he only weakened in the final 100yds. If allowed to dominate over 6f he could go well at a big price. Tariq came up 3/4l behind him and wasn’t asked too hard by McCarthy. He remains well in himself.

Aeroplane could be joined in the Jubilee by Fat Boy who worked smartly this morning taking a couple of lengths out of his lead horse Western Art over 6f. The pair went a sensible gallop with the recent Newbury and Haydock winner coming out on top travelling nicely.

Wednesday 11th June

Sir Michael Stoute – Limekilns

The Stoute team are in fine form at present and the Freemason Lodge handler put some of his better horses through their paces ahead of Ascot this morning.

Over 7f both Patkai and Galactic Star matched strides going nicely, the former looks likely to head for the King George Handicap next week and he looked in really good form as he travelled nicely alongsides his work companion.

Our banker for Ascot from the Stoute yard still remains HEAVEN SENT and over 7f she showed the boys a good pair of heels to go on by a couple of lengths from Adversity (Kieren Fallon) who in turn was just ahead of Naval Review (Improving) with Decameron last of the quartet. Heaven Sent looked in really good order here as she bossed the work group and looks one to have maximum confidence behind in the Windsor Forest Stakes next week.

Lang Shining (Kieren Fallon) looks the only danger to Bankable next week and he again worked smartly coming away from older horse Ask (Ryan Moore) in a solid 1m gallop. The duo looked in good order but Lang Shining had too much speed for his companion opening up at the end of his work.

In the final group to come up LINNGARI booked his place in the Queen Anne with another impressive piece of work. Held together under his pilot he stretched away from Dr Faustus and Colony over 7f. In a race where people are struggling to find a bet, I could only recommend Linngari whose work has been far more impressive than Tariq’s and he has been certainly doing his fair share of pigeon catching of late. He is high up on my list of Ascot bets this season.

Michael Bell – Racecourse Side, Peat Moss

The bell clan put their 2yo’s through their paces with a couple looking well in themselves.

BRAE HILL looks the pick of the Ascot juveniles and he impressed working 2l to the good of Art Connoisseur (Jamie Spencer) who had nothing to give when his companion quickened. Brae Hill has kept improving this season and looks banker material in the Windsor Castle.

Bahamian Babe is another going in the right direction and the Weatherby’s Super Sprint certainty booked her place in the Queen Mary with a comfortable workout under Hayley Turner. Led by Aunt Nicola she lengthened up nicely and looked in tremendous form. She looks a leading player behind Danehill Destiny next week.

Good Luck

Very interesting indeed Chis, I'm just starting to get to grips with next week - for which I've at last ordered Sky!! [v good special deal on now] So all clues more than welcome

Part 2:

Friday 13th June

Saeed Bin Suroor – Limekilns

Working 7f this morning Calming Influence (Kerrin McEvoy) stepped up his Jersey Stakes preparation in impressive style as he drew a good 6l clear of proven handicapper River Tiber. The King’s Best colt beat the Free Handicap winner Stimulation on his seasonal reappearance and looks the type to have improved for the run. He should take a hand in the Jersey.

Veracity (Lanfranco Dettori) could be a possible for the Hardwicke, having looked in good form as well on the Limekilns. Led by Boscobel the pair quickened up nicely together with Veracity edging ahead near the end of the gallop.

Henry Cecil – Limekilns

It was business as usual for last seasons Oak’s winning trainer and he will be looking for more group 1 winners this week at Ascot.

Phoenix Tower again confirmed he was in good order working easily over 7f. Led by Tranquil Tiger (Tom Queally) the Chester House colt barely broke sweat as he strided clear.

Ted Durcan was another rider impressed with his mount and TWICE OVER looked very well in himself as he drew on from regular lead horse Many Volumes. He is in good order and looks set for a crack at the St James Palace Stakes this week.

Rattan however looks our banker of the week from his yard and he needs 7 to come out to get a run in the Britannia Handicap. He has been given a reserve option in the Buckingham Palace on Friday but preference is for the 3yo event after his impressive work this morning. Led by maiden Upstart, Rattan cruised through with Unnefer before going on by 3l leaving dual winner Unnefer flat footed as they quickened up over the 7f gallop. Unnefer turns his attentions to the Hampton Court this week, buts its stablemate Rattan who provides our banker material if he gets a run from this yard.

Peter Chapple-Hyam – Limekilns

There aren’t many planned runners in the Chapple-Hyam camp this week but Tariq had a crucial blowout this morning.

Led by Al Qasi, Tariq looked back to his best under Adrian McCarthy stretching 3l clear of his work companion. Working 7f, Tariq looked good in his workout and looks to have leading claims in a weak Queen Anne on Tuesday.

Saturday 14th June

Saeed Bin Suroor – Limekilns

Regal Flush looks set to have a cracking at staying distances this week and is likely to head for the Gold Cup. Ridden by Ted Durcan he looked in good order as he went clear of Eastern Anthem in a strong 7f gallop.

Sir Michael Stoute – Limekilns

Spanish Moon has emerged as one of the dark horses for Royal Ascot this week and he was thoroughly impressive in his final workout before next week. Ridden by Ryan Moore the El Prado colt looked in good order as he took 3l out of Hi Calypso (Kieren Fallon), who pulled on from the blinkered Sugar Ray, who led at a strong pace in the 9f gallop. A strong piece of work, the trio looked very well in themselves with Spanish Moon impressing in good style as he stretched clear. The Hardwicke now beckons.

Maraahel was back on lead horse duties over 7f and he led a hard ridden Ask who was made to go on under strong handling having been led at a good clip over the 7f gallop. It was a decent piece of work and Ask looked well in himself.

Finally in a trio of nice colts Queen’s Vase bound Patkai gave the impression he was ready to rock, as he took off nearing the end of his 9f gallop. Richard Hills ensured there was a good pace on recent Leicester winner Meethaaq, but was soon hard pressed by the recent Haydock winner Patkai and Newmarket winner Dr Faustus. That pair drew on nicely but inside the final furlong of the gallop Patkai really picked up in good style going a good couple of lengths clear of King George Handicap fancy Dr Faustus. The 2nd was a couple of lengths adrift at the end, but he in turn pulled well clear of the highly regarded Meethaaq who had previously been matching Kensington Oval on the gallops. Patkai looks a shoe in, in the Queens Vase.

Michael Bell – Summer Gallop

Across on the summer gallops, Michael Bell worked two of his older handicappers and his main 2yo Ascot hope.

Metaphoric (Jamie Spencer) didn’t achieve as much as many people would have hoped over hurdles but he could be of interest if he goes for the Queen Alexandra on Saturday. He was meant to be leading Regime in a pre Prince Of Wales gallop but on this evidence a positive run from Regime on Wednesday will only increase confidence in Metaphoric on Saturday. Leading at strong fractions over the 9f gallop, Spencer was pushing his mount to maintain a strong pace 3f from the top, however despite cruising within 1 length of his lead horse Regime was soon under pressure and could never get beyond Metaphoric’s girths. In the final 100yds Metaphoric pulled out more going 1.5l clear of Regime at the top of the 9f gallop, this was an impressive piece of work.

Of the 2yo’s Brae Hill stood out, looking impressive as he stretched 1.5l ahead of Coventry bound Art Connoisseur. The duo went a strong pace together over a stiff 4f, but Brae Hill quickened up smartly and took a good 3l out of Art Connoisseur as they quickened. Despite Art Connoisseur making a bit of late headway, Brae Hill was always holding and looks good value in the Windsor Castle on Tuesday.

In a 7f solo gallop, the hard pulling Redford looked well in himself. He was working on his own to keep himself fresh as he can be very keen on the gallops. He would want rain to stand a chance in the Britannia Handicap.

Good Luck
