Whenever I try to change the screensaver on my other half's PC, in fact when I try to get into anything in control panel, I get this message:

'Windows cannot find 'C:\WINDOWS\rundll32.exe' blah blah blah

I've tried googling to find out what it means and how I can cure it but I don't understand any of the explanations. Can anyone explain it to me in very simple terms please?

There's some info about this on the MS website:

Basically, you need to extract a fresh copy of rundll32.exe from your Windows installation CD. The instructions there are for Windows XP, but a similar process should work for ME - let us know if it doesn't.

I'd strongly recommend you do a full virus and spyware scan once you get things working again.

Thank you Gareth. However, other half now tells me that he has thrown out all CDs to do with his computer as they were getting in his way! I have pointed out that his installation CD was rather too important to be chucked in the bin but its too late. What do I do now??

Do a complete virus scan first, I'm a bit worried about how the file was corrupted in the first place.

There might be another copy of the file on your system somewhere - can you do a search for rundll32.exe (starting in your c:\ folder and including all subfolders) and let me know what the results are?

Bin him!

Thanks again Gareth. I can only find one copy of rundll, its in the C: folder. Now I think about it, my dad's PC is Windows ME though so I could probably borrow his Installation disc. Once I get hold of it I will try to install a fresh copy of the file. Doubtless I will return to this thread for help!

I've also managed to run a virus scan but it doesn't seem to have found anything. I very much doubt its an up to date version though.

I feel like it at the moment! And I thought I was useless when it came to computers.

Just found out his is Windows 95. I don't suppose there's any possible way I could use that one is there? Is it possible to download the file from anywhere on the net?
