Tattersalls juvenile races attract 318 entrants
A combined total of 318 horses are entered for the inaugural runnings of the two Tattersalls Millions races for two-year-olds.
The $1,959,201 (1-million British pounds) Tattersalls Timeform Million for two-year-old colts, geldings, and fillies and the $1,567,361 (800,000 British pounds) Tattersalls Timeform Fillies 800 will each be run at seven furlongs on what will now be Britain's most valuable ever race day on Newmarket's Rowley Mile on October 4.
The Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes (Eng-G1) anchors the card.
The first forfeit stage for the two juvenile races is May 6. Horses remaining eligible at the first forfeit stage on May 6 will be automatically entered at no extra cost for the $783,680 (400,000 British pounds) Tattersalls Timeform 3YO Trophy at 1 1/4 miles at Newmarket in April 2009.
Trainer Brian Meehan dominated with 22 entries for the two juvenile races. Luca Cumani, Jeremy Noseda, and Aidan O'Brien are next with 14 entries each. All horses catalogued in book one of the 2007 Tattersalls October yearling sale were eligible.
The Tattersalls Timeform Million attracted 186 entries, including the two co-highest priced colts in book one of the sale. Each sold for $2,137,275 (1-million guineas) to Coolmore and Godolphin.
The unnamed Dalakhani colt out of Bella Lambada, by Lammtarra, was bought by Coolmore while Godolphin bought the Gone West colt out of Myth to Reality (Fr), by Sadler’s Wells.
While the world-record-priced Sadler’s Wells filly was not entered in the Tattersalls Timeform Fillies 800, the next two highest-priced fillies were.
They are Flame of Hestia, a Giant’s Causeway filly out of Ellen (Ire), by Machiavellian, who was bought for $2,137,275 and is now trained by James Fanshawe, and the $1,496,092 Danehill Dancer filly out of Flawly (GB), by Old Vic, who is trained by David Wachman.
"We are delighted with not only the number of entries but also the quality,” said Jimmy George, marketing director of Tattersalls.
“Even at this early stage we are looking forward to two hugely competitive and exciting contests. It is also particularly encouraging to see the wide cross-section of trainers with entries at this stage, which reflects the broad appeal of the races and book one of the October yearling sale.”
