Well yesterday was a salutary reminder that perhaps this is not the right time to be backing horses, either flat or jumps.
Both my flatties, Dawn Rising and Law Of The Sea, ran disappointingly. Especially the former, who fell out of the stalls and looked just awful all the way round; started last, finished last: my favourite. I think it may be a case of just not liking the course. He'll be a different proposition if they run him at Royal Ascot, for sure.
We'll not talk about Choosethenews, who ran like an invalid. I hate days like that.
Today there is a feast of racing: so many ways to get stuffed.
I'm restricting myself severely and the main interest is a race I have always had time for: the Victoria Cup. I've been going through the race and my form eyes suggest that Ten Pounds may well have not finished improving. The draw is an unknown but high numbers would seem to be the thing on good going. Ten Pounds is drawn 16 so that may be an advantage.
I'll be having a second go, for my sins, on Witch Hunter. He's an odd one, for sure and one that I've had in mind since last year's Royal Ascot when he ran a good, good fourth to Charyn in the Queen Anne. Unfortunately, the runs since have not matched that display but I'm loath to abandon him just yet. This drop back into handicap company and the shorter 7f trip might prove to be the key for this smart horse. He's never won beyond 7f and it could be that this has been a target for some time. The handicapper has, at last, relented, too; dropping WH two pounds after the horse has languished on 109 for seemingly ages. Not having won for so long, probably drawn on the wrong side and seemingly out of form, I'm likely the only punter in the country who would be doing this lad but 33/1 Ew the five places is tempting enough to draw me in.
I do think that Puppet Master will win the Derby trial at Lingfield. It's a terrible price, yes, but I got 11/10 this morning when I did two doubles with Puppet Master and the two in the Victoria Cup.
So, minimal stakes, minimal live watching today since the garden is the place to here in Norwich, now that the northerly wind has abated at last.
Good luck
