If you can't enjoy the racing today, you need to find another sport; there are two great meetings and competitive racing for all tastes, hurdles or chases. As you'll know by now, chasing is my preference and I'm excited to see what transpires at Haydock, Ascot and, indeed, Huntingdon.
If I was to have just one bet today, it would be:
Pic D'orhy Ascot 1.30 0/30 Win
If the ground remains good, or on the goodish side, it will play into the hooves of this one. I think his rivals are showing a preference for ground with more juice in it and this must be a factor. It looks like everything is aligned for Pic D'orhy to produce a winning run: he's won this race for the last two years and I see no reason to be backing against him here. Of course, there will be a host of followers for Il Est Francais, given his exploits around Kempton for the last two years, but I do wonder whether this distance at this stiffer track will be to his best advantage and whether he'll be fully wound up, given his main target, I feel, will be at Christmas Kempton
Whistle Stop Tour - Haydock 3.25 8/1 Ew
Now, I wouldn't say that this is a 'cliff' horse but I do feel he's worth keeping onside, since I think he's held in better regard by connections than he's shown thus far. I backed him at Cheltenham in the Ultima against his stablemate Myretown and was truly gutted to see his chance disappear after being very badly hampered at the first. It seems to me that, if he's as good as they think he is, they'll have been getting his mark down in order to pick up a proper pot. Today looks like it fits that profile and I'm hoping that he'll give a good account of himself. The stable has been quiet over the season's opening weeks but is picking up now.
2 x Singles
Ew Double
Elsewhere, I'll be relishing watching how these get on in a small L15:
Baby Sage - Huntingdon 12.48 8/1
The stable seems very cold at the moment but I shall be doing this on account of his chase breeding. I think this factor alone makes the price very attractive given that it's not a hot race by any description.
Rock My way - Ascot 1.30 7/2
Stellar Story - Ascot 3.00 11/1
Martator - Ascot 3.15
Ew L15
He won this 'comfortably' last season, is down to below that mark. It's worth having a look at the current 9/1
Come what may, I'll be enjoying this proper winter feast; it's what NH is all about: a thrilling spectacle.
Good luck, eh?
