Three days visiting a mate in London.

Good fun was had all round and I went for a trip on the Regents canal during my stay: through Regents Park’s London Zoo, through the tunnel under Edgeware road, up to Little Venice then back again to Camden Lock.

I never knew that the canal cut right across the second Lord’s cricket ground, forcing it to move to its present venue at St John’s Wood. We’re told:

‘Lord's Middle Ground, was used from 1811 to 1813 before being abandoned to make way for the construction through its outfield of the Regent's Canal.’

I can’t say I miss the bustling, heartless insouciance of London, even though I’m London born and bred. I’m so glad we moved out all those years ago.

So the Hennessey arrives and a competitive heat it looks, eh? No Apple Away. I shan’t ponder upon her likes, I can tell you; if I was to become too deeply embroiled in the whys and wherefores of her season, I’d soon be committed.

That said, the race is a puzzler, of course.

Firstly, I’ve had a look at General En Chef since you highlighted him, DO, and I can see where you’re coming from.

I do have a couple of reservations, the first of which is the distance. We could look at the 3rd over 3m 6f but it has to be noted that he’s never won over the trip before. There’ll be no hiding place in this race, stamina – wise, so I do wonder.

Secondly, looking at that Auteuil race, he ran against Gold Tweet. That horse was allocated a mark of 138 in the Betfair Chase behind Royale Pagale recently, wasn’t he. Looking at the figures after that run, we might reckon that this gives GEC a mark of 152 – 153. For the Hennessey, we see an allocation of 148. That suggests that there might not be too much to play with.

I’m siding with Colonel Harry. There are a few bits of form that catch my eye: runs behind Il Etait Temps, Grey Dawning and Le Patron included. Then there is the defeat of Trelawne at Wetherby (levels). The commentary said he ‘won going away’. Well, Trelawne is now rated 152. A lovely performance from the Colonel, there.

CH has never won over further than that 2m 3+f but I’m confident that this 3m 2f will bring about even further improvement. The 7yo’s only had twelve races under rules and sire Shirroco suggests that he’ll be needing 3m.

Forgot to mention that I'll be doing Henry's Friend for a tiny ew in the race, too.

The Hennessey apart, there’s plenty amongst the hurly-burley of the day’s cards that entice, albeit with no great confidence but you never know.

Colonel Harry – 3.00 Newbury Ew

Donnyboy – 3.20 Newcastle Ew

Etalon – 3.35 Newbury Ew

3 x Ew singles

Ew Trixie

Jerrash – Newcastle 1.35 Ew

Coastguard Station – Doncaster 2.02 Ew

2 small single Ew

I'd say that the French horse looked like a classic non-stayer to me. Came there absolutely swinging didn't he? Then went from Bentley to bike in short order.

It looked too, like CH maybe didn't get the trip either, such was his rapid capitulation. I write 'maybe' since he did try to make the running, which made me think that connections were confident of him staying, otherwise they may have held him up. Perhaps the ground was not soft enough, too. I'd be loath to say 'non stayer' at this point.

Donnyboy – 3.20 Newcastle Ew

This was an absolutely dire run. He made a mistake early on and that was it. To be honest, he didn't look too keen, did he? Howveer, there is a possibility that this ground was too lively: "I wouldn't want to risk him on properly good ground - Nick Alexander, trainer."

Etalon – 3.35 Newbury Ew

This one brought down the curtain on what was a dismal show for me yesterday. Stone last of nine, it was hard to figure why he should've run so poorly. There's nothing wrong with his jumping: looks a natural, fluent chaser. Again, it may be that he needs the ground to be riding soft. Also, I have a feeling they might just be getting his handicap rating down with a mind to a big handicap chase later in the season.

All in all a dreadful day's punting -wise but small stakes so not much damage done. Ho hum.

Didn’t take you long to put Saturday behind you, yo :). Well done.

Cheers BJ. A fantastic day, really.

40/1, 8/1, 15/8, 11/8 winners
25/1 placed ew.
40/1 and 20/1 Ew double pays off too: two placed.

Yup, totally different from yesterday's debacle, eh.

Well pleased
