Seconditis

Aftertimimg maybe, and of little comfort to you, but ........................
if you had backed with WillHill on their mobile site or App, you would have had your money back on those eight races as a consolation.
(Stake returned as a free bet if second on any televised race).

Me too. Don't do much on the Flat but lots of 2nds between February and April over jumps. Dynaste at Aintree and First Lieutenant at Punchestown are two costly ones that spring to mind

Mixed feelings. Normally I'd be tearing my hair out at a run of seconds like that but some of mine haven't been getting near second place this week...

I think it depends how it happens. Astaire didn't bother me as he never really looked like winning plus he's firmly in the notebook for a big one at some point (covered more ground than the winner tracking stands side from his draw). But TDB hurt yesterday because it looked like he was gonna sail past the winner.

The Hills offer is ok but is only for £25 and I'd prefer a refund rather than a free bet. I backed TDB with Powers and got my whole stake back because he was second.

The PP offer is only on one selected race per day, tho', and the O.P. was bemoaning his bad-luck seconditis in all the televised races. That's where Billy can be your friend, I believe. Okay, it's stakes returned as a free bet, but with any attention whatsoever one should be able to easily Lay back to get a return of 80% of the original stake.

But not knocking the PP offer by any means. It's a great gesture -- as it applies to third-placers as well, with a £50 max. I've availed of it a fair few times mesen. :o
(Today's selected PP race is Newb 14:05, btw).

Fair point, the Hills offer is better if you're less selective. I only had two bets all week and was fortunate PP chose one of the races I played in.

Tres coronas
Secret Gesture
Arod
Fort Bastion
Tiggy Wiggy
Duke Of Clarence
Tac De Boistron
Radiator

The last two hurt the most because they both looked like winning 100yds out.

In true superstitious gambler style I am hoping that exposing this on this thread will in some way lift the curse. :D

I have had a terrible case of seconditis this week - 8 of the 14 televised races.

Eight!!!!

This must be some kind of record.
Stick in there
You must be doing something right
I had a row of them over the past few weeks
Kingman being the chief offender

Big fan of ew multiples myself but disappointing if one wins and others are only placed

I'm risk averse by nature so anything that's 7/2 with 8 running, I will always back each way

I'm the same - will sometimes back ew at 5-2. It definitely doesn't enhance returns but it smooths the volatility and makes losing runs easier to deal with.

"It definitely doesn't enhance returns but it smooths the volatility and makes losing runs easier to deal with."

I agree with the last two bits, but not the first, Benny.

It smooths out the losing runs, so you are able to stake more, and bet more confidently. People tend to look back at a set of results, and seemingly 'know' they'd have been better off going win only. That isn't painting the true picture though.

All situations are different. If you're chancing a horse acting on the going, different trip, being fit, etc, it might be a case of it either will or wont be today, in which case EW is pretty pointless. Other times you're confident it'll place but only have it around 3's for the win which could mean enduring a losing run in those situations.

The sole objective with betting is to turn a long term profit in 'hard cash', while at the same time risking as little as possible. Percentage returns and win SR's only look pretty on paper. Cash is King.

Example to the above and the need to be flexible.

I dig deep and spot a horse priced up with a couple of firms at 13/2, the rest going 6's and 11/2. I think the true odds of the win are 3's, so good value everywhere, but thats only a 25% SR (if I'm correct).

I decide that rather than staking 5% of my betting capital and spreading that around, I'll stake 2% win instead. However, with the knowledge I've unearthed, I'm confident of the place, so decide 2.5% EW is the way to go, or 1% WIN and 2% EW.

I don't bet but I've often wondered why punters, rather than backing each way, don't load as much of the stake on the win part of a bet and use the place part just to return the whole stake, so for instance if backing a 20-1 shot at 1/4 odds rather than £10 each way go £16 or £17 win and £3 or£4 place (or if 1/5 odds £16win/£4 place).

I realise a small profit can be sacrificed if the bet is placed but the punter doesn't actually lose anything whereas if the bet wins the punter is better rewarded.
