... as if there aren't enough stressors in life, like tailgating twazzocks to shrieking harridans telling their beloveds to feck off at 3 am in the street...

... Currys, the purveyors of my new laptop, and Microsoft, purveyors of the bollox that is Windows 7, have caused me more grief in the past four days than pretty much anything else this year. Never mind the freakin' four looping batches of nearly 12,000 emails which the dumbos transferred from my old tower as part of their much-touted 'Knowhow' service... the feckers have deleted all of my email contacts. No, I didn't back them up before trusting 'professional experts', so don't shout at me.

If anyone on here has ever emailed me, please send me one so I can put you back on my Contacts list. Ta.

Never ever buy anything, not even a plastic bag, from Currys, Comet or PC World.

Sorry for that nasty experience, Krizon.

I use just web mail (yahoo & gmail) these days - can't be arsed with Outlook/Eudora/Thunderbird - don't really need to store emails on my PC or laptop either.

Too late now but agree with soary. I absolutely despise currys. I would not buy a box of paper from them. Arrogant customer "service" and a cynical charmless company which is thankfully sliding down the pan

I agree with using webmail too. Makes sense and being my work, its too vital to rely on back ups

Will bang on about it for ever but Apple is a world apart. And failing that, but from John Lewis (or like me, combine the two)

I have a slight flaw with my apple mac pro. popped in store (Covent garden)to ask what could be done and they will sort on the spot same day. No need for receipt, they have the serial number.

No wonder they are sweeping the world

And the laptops are different class in every single way. Best buying decision ive made in years

Did a thing on Dixons (currys of course) on my blog

I've found another 3,000 stored - as in, transferred - on my ntlworld email. I hate this flat keyboard so on Monday I'll see if our local laptop repair shop might consider swapping this swine for something where I can type at more than kindergarten speed. I consider myself duly warned for the future!

I didn't back up my email contacts cos I thought that it would be part of the saved and transferred info, dvds. I really don't know how anything works so forgive the ignorance, but another lesson learned!
