Does anyone know anything about sewing machines? Despite having no idea how to use one I keep toying with the idea of buying myself one. It would just be for taking up and repairing clothes and maybe making cushion covers and even curtains. Maybe. However I have absolutely no idea what to look for. I don't want to spend too much but I don't whether to go for a well known make that doesn't have many functions (would I use them anyway?) or a cheaper make that does. And do I need an overlocker?

I know nothing about them myself except fot the fact that my Nan has had the same Singer for as longer than I have been alive..... and that is at least 30 years

My granma used to have one of those sewing machine operated by a treadle. She could run off a garment in no time if you stuck a Jimmy Shand record on when she was doing it.

This is spooky - I'm at least thirty too!
Bet you're older than my Nan's Singer though ! [/b][/quote]
Who is he? Tony Bennett?

Which I'll decline on the grounds that matters domestic are the least possible interesting things in life. I've just doubled the cleaning lady's hours and have raised her from £8 an hour to a tenner for the privilege, too, so unless it's by sending a proxy, there's no way you'll find me within 50 miles of your club.

You must live in a dear area, Colin. The one I got was only asking for £10 an hour and I thought that was a bit pricey. (I'm not used to paying for it.)
