When I switched my mobile phone on this morning, it alerted me to a missed call but I didn't recognise the number, which looks like a mobile number.

Now, only a very few people know my mobile number and none would have any reason to phone me at the time the call was supposed to have come through.

Is it likely to be a scam? Or is there a way I can check who owns the number without opening up the mesage?

I wouldn't bother - if someone wants to get hold of you they'll call back, but if it's a scammer type thingy then you're f*cked.

Give it a go, DO. Let's face it, how much excitement is left in life for you now, as you plummet relentlessly towards increasing old age and an ever-decreasing hairline? You'll be grateful for such frissons of the unknown in a couple of years' time, so go on - pump up the adrenalin and ring back!

an ever-decreasing hairline
If there's one thing for which I feel lucky, it's the fact that at my advanced age, there's no sign of the hairline receding. The grey might be starting to fight its way through but at least it's having to battle through a fair old thicket of the gingery brown stuff.

I suspect the message is entirely innocent. If I'm right I'll know more later but these things throw sheltered old codgers like me.

On the other hand, it could be a timed device implanted by extremist Highlanders wanting their bothies and sheeplands back. You ring back, and everything within 500 yards of you goes up in a flash of Campbell tartan. You can't be too careful these days, y'know...
