I am striving to make the perfect Mojito. I am almost there, but I believe, to add the finishing touch, I need crushed ice.

I tried putting ice cubes in the liquidiser, but this resulted in slightly smaller cubes plus snow. Battering a plastic bag of ice was too much hard work and didn't result in those nice little hailstones you get in fancy bars.

So, how do you crush yours?

Most blenders now come with an ice-crushing function, or you can buy a fancy ice-crusher. With putting them on 'liquidize' you get 'shaved ice' which, as you found out, is not the same as crushed ice. But shaved ice makes snow cones, which are enjoyed by the Americans, if no-one else. You can put them in two or three layers of plastic bags and just bash the cubes with a hammer (do it outside or on the floor, rather than your kitchen worktop), rather than bashing the bag itself, Mel. That way you can remove the nicely-crushed cubes and re-bash the less well crushed ones.
