Am I the only one who has noticed an increased amount of house intruding spiders this year? Normally, I start to see more in the house towards the end of the summer, but for the past month or so I've had to remove one (well, get someone to remove it for me) about 3 or 4 times a week. The final straw came last week when I got myself up out of my bed, looked at my pillow and there was one of the little beasties sitting quite happily on my pillow, right next to where my head had just been. Then two nights ago my other half caught a rather medium sized variety in a glass which on closer examination (whilst safely trapped in said glass) appeared to be a nice dark red colour. Looking up a spider identifier on the net, the one it most closely resembled was a huntsman spider, more common to Australia and New Zealand and with a rather nasty bite. A couple of years ago I found some spider spray, which you spray along doors and windows to stop spiders coming in. I'm off to look for some now.

Totally agree with you about the increase in numbers. This year, infact the last few weeks, I have found more than usual, crawling around the house.
Most of them are those huge hairy legged house spiders, which I abhor. I don't like using sprays etc, so the jam jar method is the only one i use, but i hate going near huge spiders. I can't understand what they live on, as I don't get flies in the house!

DIM no MALES then in your abode ?????.........

but the reason some are making it into your house is... its been quite cold (apart from the other week) at night.....

but have you also noticed a drop in bees and wasps............... they are sparse around here this year I see plenty of runner bean flowers on plants but because these are not crossed pollinated they wont bare fruit.....or veg

I've noticed more spiders here too which means I'll have to get the flea spray out. I know it sounds odd but I've found that if the carpets are sprayed with the one specially made for the house there are less creepy crawlies, spiders included. Mr GG doesn't like spiders so the task of dealing with them falls to me

Yes, Merlin, a huge drop in bees, wasps and I haven't even yet seen a hoverfly! I don't know if they all go back into suspended animation and wait for a hot day, but they're certainly not out and about on the flowerbeds like last year. Even fewer ants, and they're usually very robust.

A spider on your pillow, Triptych? You know what it was doing, don't you? Walking very warily around this huge rock, which had twin tunnels of hot air coming out of two caves (your nostrils) and thinking, "If I just edge around this, I just might not get sucked up into oblivion..." . Imagine its terror... :o

There have been fewer wasps than normal this year - I'm told that they hatched earlier than usual but were caught out by a cold snap.

But it didn't stop me getting stung on the head the other day, right behind the ear, very painful!

I haven't noticed any shortfall in ants, especially red ants - plenty about.

I'm disturbed by this anti-spider prejudice, they've always come across to me as being fairly pleasant creatures. They don't say a lot, but they do a pretty useful job hoovering up really dirty bugs like silverfish.

I dont mind spiders, THEY EAT WASPS, and your all right, I've been sitting in the garden at lot longer into July this year than I would have expected, without shrieking and running back indoors.

Back to spiders, as long as they stay in their space i.e. a few feet away and sit on the wall or ceiling they can stay put. Being on my pillow could account for it being catapulted across the room though.

I've seen a huntsman spider in the flesh so to speak, they are huge but arnt regarded as dangerous, so my brother who lives in Perth tells me, they are very fast and hairy though.

VEN reminds me when I was wed!!!! :angy: I was just comming in from the veg patch and approaching the rear door which was open....I got bit by a horse fly, when I shouted out to!!! the Dragon!!she was just inside the kitchen by the door, and she said to me "how do you know it was a horse fly"(we lived 200yds from Forsters farm as the crow flies, who ran a riding school too) meanwhile the arm/elbow was now huge I replied by saying "because it had a saddle on its frigging back" women!!!   honest this is real..................

You won't get any anti-spider attitude from me, Ven, I love 'em. Friends of mine had a tarantula in their London flat - well, more correctly, in its own house in their flat! - and it was lovely. Their bristly hairs are very fascinating, though I also adore the lovely golden hairs on bees - they look like tiny teddy bears with wings.

Aw, sweeeeeeet... :D
