Stable Tours 2022/23

The rebuilding process hasn't taken very long at all. The foundations were dug at the sales, where Gordon Elliott invested in youth and constructed a stellar squad capable of playing in the Premier League for the foreseeable future.

"We have a lot of very nice young horses, four-year-olds who have won point-to-points impressively and they could be anything," Elliott tells me, before adding: "The tour only includes horses who have run before, either on the track or in points. We have a lot of unraced horses as well that we like but we couldn't squeeze everything in."

There was an awful lot to squeeze in. Cullentra House is full to the brim for the season ahead and there is high quality almost everywhere you look.

There is American Mike, who remains the apple of Elliott's eye. His unblemished record may have been ended by Facile Vega but expectations are huge for his novice hurdling campaign.

Conflated caused the most eyebrow raises last season. He didn't get very far in the Kerry National on his reappearance but went from strength to strength and won the Irish Gold Cup at Leopardstown in commanding fashion from Minella Indo. There is more than a suspicion that he is better going left-handed but Elliott is willing to have another go around a right-handed track, so he will join stablemate Galvin in the Ladbrokes Champion Chase at Down Royal next month. That is a formidable team to be taking into the first Grade 1 of the season.

That will be Galvin's Gold Cup according to Elliott, who has been dominant at that Down Royal fixture in recent years, winning a staggering 15 of the 28 races at the two-day meeting over the last two years. It is where he unleashes his most fearsome beasts each year and, as well as Conflated, Galvin and American Mike, Mighty Potter and Pied Piper are others who are pencilled in for the occasion.

Mighty Potter's schooling has gone "lovely", while fellow Grade 1-winning novice hurdler Three Stripe Life is another expected to be turning up in either the Arkle or the Turners Novices' Chase at Cheltenham in March.

Zanahiyr, winner of the WKD Hurdle at Down Royal last year before going on to finish third to the mighty Honeysuckle in the Champion Hurdle, is set to be sent down the Stayers' Hurdle path, while staying novice chasers to note include Gerri Colombe and Saint Felicien.

Elliott says: "I love the autumn and getting everything ready. It's exciting and we're lucky enough to have plenty of horses to get excited about. We have a nice team and things are coming to the boil. We'll be running plenty of nice horses over the next few weeks. A lot of my better horses are almost ready to Stable

Absolute Notions
Four-year-old gelding by Milan (sire) out of Colleen Donnoige (dam)
Owner: Robcour
Form: 1
RPR 119b
He looked very smart when he won the Land Rover Bumper at Punchestown in April. He's got strong, he's schooling well and you'll see him in a maiden hurdle soon.

Star quality
American Mike
5g Mahler - American Jennie
Bective Stud
112-3
RPR 135b
I'm convinced he's very good and I definitely haven't lost any faith in him. He goes to Down Royal for a maiden hurdle early next month. I'd say 2m4f is probably his optimum trip. He scoped dirty after his run at Punchestown, so you can put a line through that. We know he's better than that. We think the world of him. He's pure quality.

Amir Kabir
5g Mukhadram - Victory Garden
S P O'Connor
121
RPR 136h
He's a good horse, maybe a very good one. He gave himself a cut when he clattered into the second-last at Listowel but he'll be fine. He could be one we take over to the November meeting at Cheltenham. He's a slick jumper and very progressive. He deserves to step into Graded races now.

Andy Dufresne
8g Doyen - Daytona Lily
JP McManus
13P/22-F
RPR 150h 161c OR 145h 157c
The winner got away from him coming down the hill in the Grand Annual and he could never quite get to him. He still ran well and he's always been a nice horse.

An Mhi
5g Walk In The Park - Bay Pearl
Pioneer Racing & C Woods & Christopher Donnelly
42- (point-to-point form)
A very nice horse. He works well and he's one we're really looking forward to.

Arctic Ambition
7g Arctic Cosmos - See The Clouds
Go Go Go Partnership
703212-
RPR 91h 100c OR 86h 96c
He's well handicapped and should be a good fun horse for the winter for his connections. I'd be hoping he can pick up a few cheques along the way.

Ardhill
7g Shantou - Pretty Puttens
D Charlesworth
0009/01-
RPR 127h 49c OR 111h 101c
He had a setback after he won at Ascot, which was a pity as he won nicely there. There should be more to come from him this season and he should be able to pay his way.

Ash Tree Meadow
6g Bonbon Rose - Alzasca
Alymer Stud
311142
RPR 133h 153c OR 130h 145c
He'll go to Cheltenham for a novice chase at the weekend and that will be his last run until the spring. We're going to give him a break and bring him back for a nice handicap chase. He's taken really well to fences. There's a big one in him.

Au Fleuron
5g Crillon - La Pelodette
Bective Stud
412378-
RPR 133h OR 131h
He hasn't shown everyone what he shows us at home. We're sending him over fences now and he's well capable of paying his way from what we see of him at home.

Ballykeel
6g Presenting - Captain Supreme
Brendan Scully
512P-5
RPR 128h OR 123h
A big horse who probably needs soft ground. He'll do better when he goes chasing.

Battleoverdoyen
9g Doyen - Battle Over
Pioneer Racing
675235
RPR 144h 163c OR 144h 149c
He's already run well in a couple of decent races this season. He'll give his owners plenty of fun and is likely to end up in the Grand National.

Bellatior
5m Walk In The Park - Monte Solaro
KTDA Racing
10-5
RPR 106b
She's a half-sister to Altior who won a bumper first time out at Naas. She was too free when disappointing us in a Grade 2 next time at Leopardstown. She'll come on for her run at Tramore last week and we'll try to find another maiden hurdle for her soon.

Bestaline
3f Martaline - Best Day
Gigginstown House Stud
9
RPR 73
She won on the Flat in France but we knew she would come on for her first run for us at Punchestown the other day. She didn't jump well there and we'll work on that department.

Better Days Ahead
4g Milan - Bonnie And Bright
Bective Stud
1 (point-to-point form)
A really nice horse. He won his only point for Warren Ewing and came to us with a big reputation. He's ready to start off in a bumper and we're looking forward to him.

Blackwater
5g Walk In The Park - Bonnie Parker
Mrs John Magnier & Mrs D P Magnier
5-
RPR 90b
He'd been working very nicely before he ran for us in a Punchestown bumper. I thought he'd run well there but he emptied up the straight. He's definitely better than that and works well. We're looking forward to him.

Bold Getaway
6g Getaway - Queen's Forest
J Fyffe
4/213-
RPR 128h OR 125h
He won his maiden hurdle at Limerick and there should be more to come. He was a shade disappointing at Punchestown but his two runs before that were good.

Braeside
8g Presenting - The Kids Dante
KTDA Racing
6/14P3P-
RPR 124h 150c OR 122h 148c
The plan is to go back and try to win the Cork National again. Soft ground and a trip is his bread and butter.

Brandt
4g Affinisea - Bean Ki Moon
R A Bartlett
6
RPR 95b
He's a big horse who jumps very well and I think he'll improve on what he showed at Punchestown last week.

Caldwell Potter
4g Martaline - Matnie
Caldwell Construction Ltd
8
RPR 95b
A brother to Mighty Potter. He was weak last year but has strengthened up now and we think he'll develop into a smart novice hurdler.

Call Me Lyreen
6g Court Cave - Mooneys Valley
Lyreen Syndicate
1122F5
RPR 149h 143c OR 146h
He was getting into a nice rhythm when he fell at Listowel and a terrible mistake at the second-last knocked the stuffing out of him in that good Graded novice chase at Punchestown last week. He was in the process of running a big race and wouldn't have been beaten far.

Cardamon Hill
5g Presenting - Through The Lens
Denis Gallagher Racing Syndicate
42-3 (point-to-point form)
He ran well in a few points for Colin McKeever and will run in a bumper sooner rather than later.

Cato Capone
4g Notnowcato - Cap The Rose
McNeill Family & Stone Family
2- (point-to-point form)
A big horse who was second in a point at Ballynoe for Sean Doyle. The winner of that came out and won a Cork bumper, so the form is stacking up. He works like a nice horse.

Chemical Energy
6g Well Chosen - Meadstown Miss
Caldwell Construction Ltd
12185-1
RPR 134h 122c
He won quite nicely at Listowel and he's going to Cheltenham for a novice chase this week. He's getting a lot stronger but seems to be a horse who is best fresh and then trains off a bit as the season goes on.

Coko Beach
7g Cokoriko - Solana Beach
Gigginstown House Stud
6P6448-
RPR 147h 153c OR 141h 146c
He's got some amount of energy. He works at home like he's a three-year-old. The plan is to run him in all those big handicap chases again with a view to having another crack at the Grand National.

Commander Of Fleet
8g Fame And Glory - Coonagh Cross
Gigginstown House Stud
F1P831-
RPR 157h OR 157h
He pops up every year and wins a big one, as he did last season when he won the Coral Cup at 50-1. He's a talented horse on his day. He'll mainly run in conditions hurdles.

Star quality
Conflated
8g Yeats - Saucy Present
Gigginstown House Stud
U211F2-
RPR 141h 172c OR 138h 168c
We're going to bring him to Down Royal for the Ladbrokes Champion Chase along with Galvin. He's probably better going left-handed but he did win a maiden hurdle at Fairyhouse going right-handed and it's probably time we gave him a shot at it. He's a fair horse and I'm absolutely delighted with him right now – he's flying. The way he ran at Aintree would make you wonder whether we should have run him in the Gold Cup rather than the Ryanair at Cheltenham. The Savills Chase and Irish Gold Cup will be on his radar after Down Royal.

Cool Survivor
5g Westerner - Pale Face
Gigginstown House Stud
26-61
RPR 113h
All he does is gallop and Jack [Kennedy] said he already wants three miles after he won his maiden hurdle over two and a half at Punchestown last week. He'll come on for the run too.

Coqolino
7g French Fifteen - Classic Angel
JP McManus
2/2F21/4-
RPR 133h 130c OR 130h
He had a setback last season and that's why you didn't see him after he bumped into Bob Olinger at Gowran Park. He's a fine, big horse and we're looking forward to getting his chasing career back on track.

Country Queen
5m Yeats - Fruits De Mer
Keep Smiling Syndicate
21F136
RPR 111h OR 116h
She's consistent and more than capable of being competitive in handicaps from two to two and a half miles off her current mark.

Coventry
5g Galileo - Moonstone
AD-NYC Birdinthehand Syndicate
5/6270-2
RPR 129h OR 121h
I was delighted with the way he ran on his first start for us at Punchestown last week. He seems a thorough stayer and we'll try to find a nice 3m handicap hurdle for him somewhere.

Croke Park
4g Walk In The Park - Toledana
Gigginstown House Stud
21- (point-to-point form)
Won a point at Dromahane for Harley Dunne and I'd say he's decent, but whatever he does in bumpers will be a bonus because he's a big horse and made for jumping.

Dartington
5g Siyouni - Secret Pursuit
R Stokes
7-43114
RPR 127h OR 124h
He was a bit unlucky at Sligo on his last run over hurdles as he made a bad mistake two out. He probably did too much too soon on the Flat at Clonmel last time.

Death Duty
11g Shantou - Midnight Gift
Gigginstown House Stud
5716U0-
RPR 150h 162c OR 142h 142c
It was great to see him getting his head back in front in the Grand National Trial at Punchestown and I thought he was the best-handicapped horse I had going to Cheltenham. He ran well enough in the Ultima but came down early in the Grand National. I'd imagine he'll end up back at Aintree.

Dark horse
Deeply Superficial
5m Flemensfirth - Glenside Tara
Alymer Stud
1- (point-to-point form)
A smashing mare. All of her work has been very good. We're waiting on a bit of softer ground to start her off. The form of her point win at Lingstown has been franked by the runner-up a few times since. We like what we see from her at home.

Delta Work
9g Network - Robbe
Gigginstown House Stud
3/46613-
RPR 150h 171c OR 152h 157c
He'll have four runs this season. We want to get more experience into him over the cross-country course at Cheltenham, so he'll run in the handicap there next month. He could get beaten there as he'll have top weight but it's vital we get more experience into him. He'll go for the Boyne Hurdle that Tiger Roll always used to run in at Navan after that, then on to the cross-country at the festival before the Grand National.

Demandrivingdouvan
5g Walk In The Park - Bollin Jasmine
Buttonwood Farm
2
RPR 112b
The form of the Punchestown bumper he was second in has been franked a few times since and I thought he was unlucky there too. I don't think it was Jamie's [Codd] finest hour. He's getting very strong and I think he's going to win a lot of races.

Doctor Churchill
4g Mukhadram - Salhooda
Pierce Gerard Molony
5120-90
RPR 126h OR 121h
He didn't run his race at Listowel but we found the problem when we got him home. You can put a line through that run and he'll pay his way through the winter.

Douglas DC
4g Zoffany - Hollie Point
David Spratt
1-223F6
RPR 126h OR 121h
He's a strong traveller who has bumped into some decent horses over the summer. There should be a handicap or two in him.

Duffle Coat
5g Alhebayeb - Humilis
R Stokes
1/00P-48
RPR 143h
I'm a little bit baffled by him. He gets caught out of his ground and then flies home. We're taking him over to Cheltenham in November for a 2m handicap hurdle and we'll see how that goes.

Dunboyne
7g Yeats - Patsy Cline
S P O'Connor
80500-6
RPR 140h 114c OR 127h
He got no luck in any of those big 3m handicap hurdles last year, including the Pertemps Final. He should make into a nice staying handicap chaser and will run in a beginners' chase shortly.

Ebasari
4g Lope De Vega - Ebayya
Royal's & Blue Syndicate
30-1455
RPR 125h OR 123h
He's done well since going over hurdles and has won twice for us. He wasn't beaten far at Punchestown last week and turning in he arrived to have every chance. We'll have plenty of fun with him.

Ellis Boyd Redding
5g Doyen - Daytona Lily
C B Woods
2
RPR 106b
He seems to have strengthened up a lot and I'd say he's quite a nice horse. We'll find something suitable for him very soon.

Enki Flacke
5g Buck's Boum - Holly Girl
M J Wasylocha
335-111
RPR 121h OR 116h
He rattled up a sequence at Perth over the summer. We might step him up in trip now and there could be more to come when we do.

Eric Bloodaxe
7g Saint Des Saints - Diorissima
Gigginstown House Stud
121702-
RPR 143h OR 137h
We'll probably send him over fences. He did well for Joseph [O'Brien] and won plenty of races. He looks a stayer and should do well chasing.

Escaria Ten
8g Maresca Sorrento - Spartes Eria
McNeill Family
23P/829-
RPR 142h 159c OR 132h 151c
He ran better than his finishing position suggests in the Grand National. He was only ninth in the end but was bang there in between three and two out. We'll be aiming him at some of the big staying handicap chases.

Farclas
8g Jukebox Jury - Floriana
Gigginstown House Stud
425/U2F-
RPR 149h 156c OR 145h 150c
The Grand National will be his ultimate aim and we'll work back from there. He was fifth in it in 2021 and I'm keen for him to have another crack at it.

Felix Desjy
9g Maresca Sorrento - Lamadoun
A Dunlop
0-14B70
RPR 152h 155c OR 140h 150c
He got a cut at Listowel and things just didn't happen for him – they went very slow there. He'll go for the handicap hurdle at Down Royal early next month and retains plenty of enthusiasm.

Star quality
Fil Dor
4g Doctor Dino - La Turbale
Caldwell Construction Ltd
11122-2
RPR 141h OR 146h
We're sending him straight over fences as we feel the four-year-old allowance will be a very useful tool. He'll be dangerous. You'd have to be excited about him going chasing given the way he used to jump hurdles. He's a talented horse.

Firm Footings
4g Walk In The Park - Tempest Belle
Caldwell Construction Ltd
3
RPR 107b
A lovely horse with a great pedigree. He's a half-brother to Monalee. You won't see the best of him until he sees a hurdle over a trip but we might try to win a bumper with him first. He's nice.

Floueur
7g Legolas - Saraska D'Airy
Claudio Michael Grech
33130P-
RPR 144h 148c OR 140h 140c
He's going to be aimed at some of those big staying handicap chases. He made a lot of mistakes in the Irish National and he's better judged on some of his earlier form during that campaign. He's entered in the Munster National at Limerick on Sunday and might go there.

Folcano
7g Falco - Floriana
Bective Stud
69490-3
RPR 133h 132c OR 129h
I was thrilled with him at Listowel on his chase debut. He wasn't beaten far at all and he'll improve plenty for the run as it was his first appearance since April.

Found A Fifty
5g Solskjaer - Fillmein
Bective Stud
1- (point-to-point form)
You'd have to like what you saw from him when he won his sole point for Mark Fahey at Boulta last November. He's showing us nice things at home.

Foxfire Glow
4g Vadamos - Fabiola
JP McManus
2-
RPR 119h
He had a nice run in France for Francois Nicolle when just touched off in a conditions hurdle at Compiegne. He's a very nice addition to the yard and one we like.

Frontal Assault
7g Presenting - The Folkes Choice
Gigginstown House Stud
342P2-1
RPR 134h 149c OR 130h 142c
I'd imagine we'll head for something like the Troytown. The Munster National at Limerick might be a bit sharp for him but Navan could suit. I thought he'd need the run at Galway but I'd say the race fell apart. I was pleased with what he did, though. He was very good.

Fury Road
8g Stowaway - Molly Duffy
Gigginstown House Stud
23152-3
RPR 159h 159c OR 153h 155c
He goes to Down Royal for the Grade 2 chase for second-season novices. He's best fresh and when he's good he can look very good. He was brilliant the day he beat Run Wild Fred at Leopardstown over Christmas.

Gallyhill
7g Getaway - Tanit
Claudio Michael Grech
P/FBP2-1
RPR 138h 137c OR 136h
He got his head in front at Down Royal and could develop into a nice handicap chaser. He's not fully exposed yet and I'd like to think there is more to come.

Star quality
Galvin
8g Gold Well - Burren Moonshine
R A Bartlett
1214-61
RPR 142h 171c OR 140h 166c
All roads lead to Down Royal for the Ladbrokes Champion Chase. That will be his Gold Cup. He probably doesn't get the credit he deserves; we're lucky to have him. Davy [Russell] felt he'd never jumped as well as he did at Punchestown last week. Fitness-wise, he's probably a little behind where he was last year and he'll come on from the run, but it was a nice performance, a great starting point, and I was delighted with him. He had to give Run Wild Fred a lot of weight but good horses can do that and he's a very good one.

Gars Du Sceaux
6g Saddler Maker - Replique
JP McManus
211/9-
RPR 148h 76c OR 138h
He never really got his ground last season, so we're hoping the rain will come for him. I'd say he'll develop into quite a nice sort when he gets his ground. He's got ability.

Gerri Colombe
6g Saddler Maker - Ruse De Guerre
Robcour
11/11-
RPR 139h
He's going to make a top novice chaser. He's probably going to need soft ground but you'd have to be excited about seeing what he can do over fences. He's one we like a lot.

Getaway Goldie
6m Getaway - Mac Idol
Royals, Lillies & Blues Partnership
81-1214
RPR 115h 129c OR 106h 118c
She won three for us over the summer and could end up running in the amateur handicap chase coming up at Cheltenham.

Ginnets Girl
4f Mamool - Qeasy
Joe & Danny Byrne Partnership
41552
RPR 103h
She had a good run over hurdles behind a nice filly of Noel Meade's at Tipperary. She stayed going well, so I'd say a step up to two and a half miles will suit her. She's a nice little filly.

Glan
7m Getaway - Fleur
JP McManus
51-P04P
RPR 132h OR 131h
She's probably seen at her best on a flat track where there's an emphasis on speed. She has a turn of foot and can hopefully pick up another nice handicap somewhere along the line.

Glenloe
11g Kayf Tara - Mandys Native
JP McManus
4303-4U
RPR 147h 139c OR 123c
He's getting on in years but looks like he has a mark now that he should be well able to win a nice handicap chase off on soft ground.

Grand Paradis
6g Martaline - Outre Mer
Caldwell Construction Ltd
P322P1-
RPR 150h 143c OR 139c
It just didn't happen for him in the Plate at Cheltenham; he never got into it. He's a good jumper when on song and it was nice to see him open his account over fences at Cork in April. That would have done his confidence the world of good. He's got plenty of ability but is just not the easiest to predict.

Grand Roi
6g Spanish Moon - Ultra D'Anjou
Bective Stud
44P3-2F
RPR 156h 134c OR 145h
He took a heavy fall at Fairyhouse. It was too far out to know how he would have fared. Hopefully it won't leave a mark on him as he has some quality form over hurdles.

Halka Du Tabert
5m Balko - Naska
Kenneth Alexander
1- (point-to-point form)
Here's a really nice mare. She couldn't have won her point any easier and she's got very strong over the summer. We'll find a bumper for her somewhere soon. She's big, so she'll jump a hurdle sooner rather than later.

Happy D'Ex
5m Saddler Maker - Soiree D'Ex
KTDA Racing
68-S112
RPR 119h 116c OR 126h
She was just touched off on her first start over fences at Fairyhouse. You'd have to be happy with that as a starting point, especially as she needs further than two miles.

Harmonya Maker
5m Saddler Maker - Hahyasi
Tim O'Driscoll
2174-
RPR 113b
She's a very talented lady. She goes hurdling and is definitely one of our better mares – you'd have to be looking forward to seeing what she can do. She won't make Down Royal as she was a bit late coming back in.

He's Ultimate
4g Champs Elysees - Hirayna
Philip Polly
2- (point-to-point form)
I have a feeling this chap is a nice young horse. He was second in a point at Loughanmore for Patrick Turley and will start off in a bumper sooner rather than later.

Hiaou
5g Saddler Maker - Anacapa
Caldwell Construction Ltd
3B1F-
RPR 131h
The one thing we learned about him last season was that he needs time between his runs. We'll find a beginners' chase for him in the coming weeks.

Hollow Games
6g Beat Hollow - I'm Grand
Bective Stud
11333-5
RPR 145h OR 142h
I think he'll be a better chaser than he was a hurdler. He finished off well in the Martin Pipe and has some good form to his name over hurdles. I think he can better that over fences, though. He'll probably start off in a 2m4f beginners' chase somewhere.

Hurricane Georgie
5m Court Cave - Beesplease
Pioneer Racing
111UP5-
RPR 120h 149c OR 128h 144c
She was brilliant in the Midlands National but not much has gone right since. She got rid of Jack Kennedy at the first fence of the Galway Plate and an early mistake meant she never got into the Kerry National. We just need to get her confidence back. She's a lovely mare but has gone up a lot in the weights and won't be easy to place.

I A Connect
7g Jeremy - Kings Orchid
McNeill Family
11210-U
RPR 134h OR 131h
He was running a big race at Punchestown in a hot handicap hurdle when he got rid of Adrian Heskin at the second-last. There could be a nice race in him this season off his mark in the low 130s.

Dark horse
I Am Fortunata
5g Getaway - Corskeagh Shadow
Claudio Michael Grech
14-

Two for the tracker
You'd have to love the way Absolute Notions won the Land Rover Bumper at Punchestown with some good horses in behind him and you'd be hoping he could turn out to be top class.

I know it's early in the season but I wouldn't put anyone off having a few quid on Queens Brook for the Mares' Hurdle at Cheltenham. That's her ultimate aim and if we get a clean run with her she'll take some beating in it.

That's the beauty of jump racing: last year's bumper horses going over hurdles, smart hurdlers facing fresh challenges over fences, established Graded performers at the top of the pyramid.

Gordon Elliott has any amount of established horse and we'll come to those shortly. First, let's consider a few lesser-known names, recruits from the point-to-point field, the source of so many of the stable's best horses.

The next crop of potential stars includes Better Days Ahead, who won a maiden at Lisronagh in February for Warren Ewing, and King Of Kingsfield, a commanding front-running winner for Pat Turley at Portrush in March.

Among the mares, it should be worth looking out for a pair of five-year-olds, Halka Du Tarbet, who routed the opposition at Borris House last December when trained by Ellen Doyle, and Deeply Superficial, an impressive winner for Matthew O'Connor Flynn at Lingstown the same month.

These, and several other notable additions to the stable including Cato Capone, beaten by a subsequent bumper winner at Ballynoe, all come from top nurseries with strong reputations.

Turning to last season's bumper horses, pride of place must go to American Mike, still regarded as a future star despite his eclipse behind the brilliant Facile Vega at Cheltenham and Punchestown. Absolute Notions ranks highly after winning the Goffs Land Rover Bumper on his debut and inspiring the £235,000 purchase of runner-up Miss Agusta to join the team. Demandrivingdouvan, beaten by the exciting Marine Nationale at Punchestown, also appeals as a smart jumper in the making.

The unbeaten Gerri Colombe is a leading novice chase prospect, along with two Grade 1 novice hurdle winners from last season, Mighty Potter and Three Stripe Life. Fil Dor is a likely sort to exploit the four-year-old allowance over fences, while his contemporary Pied Piper enters the senior hurdling ranks with every chance of making a big impression.

A sure sign that the stable is getting into full winter mode was the reappearance of Galvin at Punchestown last week. He won in a professional style and is on course for a potentially informative clash with stablemate Conflated, last season's Irish Gold Cup winner, in the Ladbrokes Champion Chase at Down Royal.

A WITP called after Gordon's beloved Meath - notebook

Declared 5:05 Cheltenham Friday

The great Alan Rickman was given one of the most memorable lines in modern cinema in his role as Hans Gruber in Die Hard: "And when Alexander saw the breadth of his domain, he wept, for there were no more worlds to conquer."

By the age of 30, Alexander The Great had conquered much of the known world. Joseph O'Brien, who will reach that milestone next May, has done similar in racing, leaving a massive imprint on the sport through his brief but glorious riding career followed by a seamless transition to training.

The analogy with the imperious Alexander crumbles in conversation with the mild-mannered O'Brien, yet the young trainer exudes a sense of purpose that suggests he will always have a hunger for conquest, even when discussing a jumps team that has been significantly curtailed.

"It's a scaled-down operation, a small select team. The focus here is now mainly on the Flat," O'Brien says.

He quickly adds: "I'm not giving up the jumpers. Definitely not. Not as long as I'm lucky enough to have great owners happy to send me young horses. I'd like to think I'll always have jumpers around the place. But they'll be a minority."

To underline his continuing commitment, the man who supervised the training of 2016 Triumph winner Ivanovich Gorbatov before receiving his licence points to juvenile hurdling prospects Good Heavens and Nusret.

Several senior members of his squad, including the excellent Darasso, are notable for their versatility as hurdlers/chasers at Graded level. When it comes to the mares, O'Brien stresses that acquiring as much black type as possible is the main objective.

He likes to set the bar high, a factor that punters should bear in mind. There won't be many soft targets. As he says, it's a select team, and most of them will be competing at a demanding level, whether in top handicaps or Graded races.

A Wave Of The Sea
Six-year-old gelding by Born To Sea (sire) out of Je T'Adore (dam)
Owner: JP McManus
Form figures: F19-6F6
Racing Post Rating: 150 (chase) 140 (hurdles); Official Rating 149 (chase)
He's won three races at the Dublin Racing Festival, the first as a juvenile hurdler, so I guess that's the way we'll be heading with him, to try to win the Grade B handicap chase there for a third time. He's a good, solid handicapper and only six. There have been a few times when he's been let down by his jumping, but at the same time there have been days when he has jumped really well and everything has gone right. So far the pattern has been one big win every season, so I'm hopeful he can do that again at least.

You couldn't really have asked for better for a first run over fences than when he won at Gowran at the beginning of the month. He jumped well and it was a very positive performance. There are plenty of options, but since he showed a liking for Cheltenham when winning the Martin Pipe he could go back there for the November meeting to see where we stand. He stays well and I think he's going to make a high-class staying novice chaser.

A very nice filly who has come from France with a good deal of experience, including over fences. The first two finished a very long way in front of the others when she won a maiden hurdle at Killarney, and it was a lovely way to get her started. She's going to run in a Grade 3 at Down Royal and if that goes well she could travel to Cheltenham in November. Chasing is an option too, but perhaps we'll leave that for next season.

I wish he was qualified to run in the Grand National. I can understand the thinking in keeping six-year-olds out of the race, but I truly believe he wouldn't be out of place at Aintree next year. We were able to exploit the four-year-old allowance last season, and he's proved himself to be very tough and consistent. He was the first five-year-old to win the Kerry National for a very long time. He could go for the Coral Gold Cup at Newbury. The Irish Grand National will have to be this season's long-term target, but it's Aintree in 2024, for sure, if all goes well.

We're so fortunate to have a horse like him. Hurdling or chasing, it doesn't make any difference to him. He's so tough and consistent, and it's a great benefit when you can have such a choice of races for a horse with his high rating. He can run against Honeysuckle in Grade 1 hurdle races and finish second to a horse of Hewick's ability in the Galway Plate. He'll continue to go for big handicaps over fences and valuable conditions races over hurdles.

Now he has a maiden win under his belt, the plan is to step him up in class in the Monksfield Novice Hurdle at Navan. He was off for a long time before he ran at the Galway festival and made good progress from that run to win at Listowel. He was second in a Group 3 race at Newmarket as a three-year-old and has the makings of a good novice hurdler.

A bit like Darasso, he's so versatile and capable of running to around 150 over hurdles or fences. He can operate over a range of distances too. The long-term plan is to train him for the Irish Grand National. He ran a nice race when he was fifth to Lord Lariat last season. I've no particular short-term target but he'll probably run somewhere in November. There's no rush back since we're thinking ahead to Fairyhouse at Easter.

We aimed him high after he won a Grade 3 novice chase last season. We've been running him in handicaps more recently and the hope is he'll pick up one at some point. He's done most of his racing around two miles. We tried him over three miles in the Kerry National and he stayed fairly well, so maybe we have more options now.

He's been a fabulous servant since his juvenile hurdling days, and the obvious ambition for this season is to try to win the Marsh Chase at Aintree for the third time in a row. He's a real two-and-a-half-mile horse, and that's how I see him even though we have let him take his chance over three miles at Punchestown for his final start of the last two seasons. He may start off in the Clonmel Oil Chase, and then we would plan towards the Betfair Ascot Chase. I could see him bypassing Cheltenham like last season so he arrives at Aintree fresh. For a horse who is still only seven, he's achieved a lot, and he's very tough.

She lost her way over fences last season after winning a novice race at Galway. The aim with a mare like her is to get as much black type as possible, and that's why we've let her take her chance in good races, including a couple of Grade 1s. We're thinking of running her in conditions races over hurdles this season before she gets covered in the spring and I'm hopeful she can recover her best form.

Good Heavens
3g Zoffany - Round Of Applause
JP McManus
8-32129 (Flat form)
He has plenty of experience from the Flat and has schooled well over hurdles. His Flat form is good enough to suggest he can make the grade as a juvenile hurdler. He went very close off a mark of 98 in the Irish Cambridgeshire, only just beaten by one of our four-year-olds. He's a homebred out of an unraced Galileo mare, so it's not a jumping pedigree, but we've had horses by Zoffany who have taken well to hurdling, and I'm looking forward to getting him started.

Like several of our more experienced jumpers, he can mix between hurdling and chasing, and he's a good solid horse who is suited by a test of stamina. Last season we went back over hurdles with him after a couple of disappointing chase runs and it seemed to work for him. We'll stay on that road for the moment and he'll have his next run in the Lismullen Hurdle at Navan. He hasn't done a huge amount of racing over fences, and his overall chase record is good, so that's an option in the background.

Midnight Run
8g Well Chosen - Knockamullen Girl

It's a bit frustrating he hasn't won over fences yet, but he's picking up a few quid as well as plenty of experience in Graded novice races. He was going well enough when he fell in last season's Drinmore, and you would think he could pick up a good race over fences at some stage. Two and a half miles is his optimum, and the softer the ground the better for him.

Nusret
3g Golden Horn - Serres
Simon Munir & Isaac Souede
232160 (Flat form)
I think he'll make a decent juvenile hurdler. He has schooled well, and gained plenty of experience on the Flat. He has a strong middle-distance pedigree. His dam is closely related to Conduit, and he's won over a mile and a half, so there's going to be no worries about stamina.

RPR 143h OR 142h
He gained a lot of experience as a juvenile hurdler last season, and that's been a benefit in the last few months. The Lartigue at Listowel is always a competitive race, and you get an idea of his progress when you see that he went up 10lb for winning it. The plan is to run him in the Fishery Lane Hurdle at Naas next; he's entitled to have a go at some of the good conditions hurdles on account of how well he's done in handicaps. His record shows he's tough and he's done plenty of racing for a hurdler of his age. He's taken it well.

Six Feet Apart
4f Mount Nelson - Celtic Cygnet
P D Savill

RPR 116h OR 116h
We've been trying to win a maiden on the Flat with her but that hasn't worked out and she's going novice chasing soon. There is a good programme for mares and she'll probably start off in a beginners' race for mares. She could do well in conditions races when she gets experience.

Scarlet And Dove
8m Jeremy - Dark Mimosa
Gigginstown House Stud
223P3-1
RPR 152c 124h OR 150c
She's likely to be aimed at the Grade 2 mares' chases at Cheltenham and Punchestown just like last season, and since she's won at that level she deserves a shot at a Grade 1 somewhere along the way. That would be the main ambition for her at this stage. She takes a bit of getting fit so I'm not sure when she'll be ready to start off again. She's a really lovely mare to have in the yard.

Two for the Tracker

Good Heavens and Nusret are two juvenile hurdlers who could do well judging by their Flat form.

Expert view

Hearing Good Heavens has "schooled well" means he is very much on my radar for the Triumph Hurdle despite not being bred for the game.

Joseph O'Brien has trained some quality juveniles over the last decade – Ivanovich Gorbatov, Fakir D'Oudairies and Sir Erec being the three who instantly spring to mind – and the Irish Cambridgeshire runner-up has the makings of a very smart recruit. He's not quoted for the race yet but keep an eye out for when he is.

The aforementioned Fakir D'Oudairies will once again captain the team for the new season. For whatever reason, despite being a strong stayer over two and a half miles, things have not happened for him over three. Aintree appears the ultimate aim and, unless Allaho goes there this season, he will take a bit of stopping in his quest for a hat-trick of Marsh Chases at the Grand National meeting.

Dawn Rising could be a top-notch novice hurdler. He won with plenty in hand at Listowel and the runner-up, The Short Go, had some solid form against The Nice Guy last season. The Monksfield Novice Hurdle is next and the long home straight at Navan ought to play to his strengths. Don't forget he was beaten less than two lengths by the once 120-rated Al Aasy in a Bahrain Trophy once upon a time so he has no shortage of class.

O'Brien might be focusing more on the Flat but he is still a terrific target trainer over jumps and former Galway Plate winner Early Doors could be a big player in the Irish National.

It is impossible not to be impressed by the enthusiasm and energy of Nicky Henderson.

The Lambourn ace, who has been training since 1978 and turns 72 in seven weeks, is as up for it as ever, which is no surprise when you consider he might have found his latest horse of a lifetime in the phenomenal Constitution Hill, who heads the betting for the Unibet Champion Hurdle after his devastating demolition job in the Supreme.

Henderson's historic Seven Barrows yard, however, is no one-horse operation.

"Last year I had a good idea who the top novice hurdlers were and I'm not absolutely sure at the moment, but you hope something is there and we didn't know this time last year Constitution Hill was any good, did we?" Henderson says.

"The youngsters appear the part, while the novice chasers – with Jonbon and Balco Coastal – look good. You need Shishkin and Chantry House to get back to themselves for the senior chasers, but they can. We knew their issues and have hopefully solved them, and Constitution Hill, Epatante and Marie's Rock are in great form as senior hurdlers. It's a good spread with a bit of everything, including some cracking mares."

The recent rain will buoy Henderson, who adds: "The weather was and is causing a headache as you might have thought about slowing it down a shade. There's no point getting them ready and not being able to run. It had to turn sooner rather than later, but it didn't seem to have rained since the Wednesday of the Cheltenham Festival!"

She ran a respectable race in the Cesarewitch but, having travelled strongly until a furlong and a half from home, seemed to flatten out, which was disappointing. I think she's better than that. He was, after all, hardly disgraced when making the frame in the Cleeve, Stayers' and Liverpool Hurdles after that success. He came back from JP's stud looking magnificent and has had more work done on his back. He was pulled up in the Gold Cup, but he's had a wind operation and we'll likely follow a similar route with the National, which he was entered in last season, an option. I think everybody knows by now what an astonishing animal we're dealing with – one who was remarkably laid-back when he got here. We were almost asking Barry Geraghty, who urged Michael and me to buy him, for our money back! Barry promised us he was the real deal and he then did some fast work this time last year, and we've never looked back. He won easily on his debut under rules at Sandown before a flawless effort in the Tolworth, which took us to the Supreme at Cheltenham, where he produced an exceptional performance. He's strengthened over the summer, but I can't stress how brilliant his temperament is. That allows his talent to flow – and that talent is extraordinary. The aim, unsurprisingly, is the Champion Hurdle and a clash with Honeysuckle, which should be something to savour. The thought is a return in the Ascot Hurdle on November 19 as Epatante seems set for Newcastle's Fighting Fifth a week later.

Generally reliable, he had a run at Uttoxeter recently and I was disappointed. I thought he was in outstanding form and he travelled accordingly until two out but then weakened. He can do it over fences and hurdles, so is not one to give up on, and he'll handle easier ground.

He suffered a nasty tendon injury when he won at Kempton last year and missed the rest of the season, which was a huge shame as he's got enormous potential. It was a bad injury and I hope he'll be back one day, especially as his owner Kenny Alexander donates his prize-money to the foundation of Doddie Weir, the former Scottish rugby international who sadly has motor neurone disease. We've thought highly of him since he won on his hurdling debut two years ago and he won his first two over fences last season but jumped to his left. He was then a respectable fifth in the Brown Advisory at the festival and followed that by winning a traditionally competitive novice handicap chase at Ayr. He's had breathing and back surgery since and can continue his way towards the highest level, perhaps starting in an intermediate chase at Sandown next month before the Coral Gold Cup at Newbury on November 26.

She had another fantastic season, which started when she dead-heated in the Fighting Fifth – a race she'd also landed the year before. Next up was Kempton's Christmas Hurdle and she was impressive in that too. I can't say an uncharacteristic mistake at the last cost her the Champion Hurdle, but it did cost her ground behind Honeysuckle. We stepped up half a mile in trip for the Aintree Hurdle and she was brilliant, but probably not at her best when third to Marie's Rock at Punchestown, although I think we can excuse one somewhat lacklustre effort. She's a star and the fact she stays two and a half miles opens up options, although the Fighting Fifth is likely to be her starting point again. I couldn't be happier with her; she's in excellent form.

She shows nothing and is incredibly lazy at home but did win twice over hurdles early in 2021, so I wasn't worried when she was the same last season. The Topham was our long-term plan but she unseated James Bowen at the first. She'd sparkled before that, winning two chases and being third in the Pendil. She can easily get more black type over fences because, like her half-sister Casablanca Mix, she's normally a faultless jumper.

He's had a great summer and his jumping has been exemplary, so he could be one of the season's star novice chasers. He hasn't seen a fence yet, but if there are three horses who are making me happy at the moment it's him, Epatante and Chantry House. Last season didn't go to plan as we missed the Tingle Creek, when he wasn't right after some health problems, but we got him to Kempton for the Desert Orchid. He won that and it was the ideal stepping stone to the Clarence House and that epic clash with Energumene. It was a thrilling race – I thought we were in trouble, but Shishkin dug deep to win. We were happy with him going to Cheltenham, where it rained heavily on Champion Chase day. I knew before the first something was amiss and it wasn't just the ground. A body scan revealed a rare bone condition, which caused intermittent lameness. His latest scans were good and I'm told he's not prone to it, so we're still quietly on course for the Tingle Creek at Sandown on December 3. I'm very happy with him and the long-term plan is another dust-up with Energumene in the Champion Chase in March. We've beaten him and he's beaten us, but hopefully our issues are behind us and he can get back to what he showed – when he was right – at Ascot.

He didn't fire when tried over fences, so we brought him back over hurdles and, for once, a plan worked as he won at Worcester on the Queen's Platinum Jubilee weekend on Derby day in June. I was at Epsom but got considerable pleasure from that. It might be sensible to stay hurdling, but with more schooling he'd be a competent chaser.

A heartening second in an Irish bumper, he's been plagued with a splint problem, but I pray it's just growing pains because he's shown a considerable amount. He's got a great attitude to jumping and is a chaser through and through, but a full season novice hurdling will be first.

Held up before a comfortable victory at Newbury, he was on the shortlist for Cheltenham but had lameness issues relating to his back, so he missed the festival and his preparation for Aintree was unsatisfactory. We had a memorial service for his late owner Henry Ponsonby last week and it would be wonderful if this youngster turned out to be decent - and there were signs of promise when he ran at Fontwell on Wednesday. This handsome chap beat Hillcrest in a bumper and won over hurdles at Doncaster in December, but he suffered an injury and missed the rest of the campaign. He's not a novice over hurdles and lacks experience for fences, but he could go novice chasing. Either way, his future is bright, extremely bright.

Unraced horses
Given the success of Constitution Hill, it's fair to say we're fond of Blue Bresil's progeny and we have a host of youngsters by him.

They include an unnamed four-year-old gelding out of Chocca Wocca, who we trained for Richard and Lizzie Kelvin-Hughes. They're involved in this outstanding prospect with James and Jean Potter, who have two unnamed four-year-old fillies with us. There's a Pether's Moon I like a lot and a nice Kayf Tara out of Hora, a decent and durable staying hurdler for us a few years ago.

We have a well-related four-year-old filly by Blue Bresil who is for sale and is easy on the eye. She seems to have inherited the laid-back attitude her sire passes on to his stock, while I can't wait to see how an unnamed gelding of Malcolm Denmark's gets on. He's by Sprinter Sacre's sire Network and is from the family of Geos, who won a Christmas Hurdle for us.

I think our three-year-olds, assembled over the summer by Minty [bloodstock agent David Minton] and me or sent from other quarters, are a beautiful bunch.

It's too early to make bold predictions but I reckon there are some proper individuals among them and they feature a really classy Blue Bresil gelding who Michael Buckley bought himself. The Dulvertons have Kintail, another Blue Bresil who ticks all the boxes and is a half-brother to their useful six-year-old Kyntara.

Middleham Park also have a three-year-old Blue Bresil filly, who is bred on the same cross as Constitution Hill as she's out of a King's Theatre mare, while they've got an athletic Jukebox Jury gelding and a super Sholokhov to look forward to as well.

We've always been big fans of Milan as a sire so I couldn't resist Surrey Quest's little brother and another three-year-old, who is for sale and is active but blessed with a fabulous mind and was a pleasure to break in. They look like they could come to hand in good time, which hopefully applies to The Happy Chapati, who is a Champs Elysees half-brother to prolific hurdler The New One, who had plenty of battles with our horses back in the day.

He's a particularly bright sort and I have two striking geldings by Battle Of Marengo and Doyen, the latter of whom is for sale. Cinger Powa, a Racinger with loads of scope and presence who is also fairly sharp, is also for sale.

Johnny Blue, who is owned by John Neocleous, is a good-moving Soldier Of Fortune gelding who might be ready sooner than some, while my daughter Sarah is looking for some partners for an attractive, early filly by that sire.

Nick and Bo Wilson's Manala is another filly to catch the eye; she's quality and has the pedigree to back that up as she's from the family of Sizing John.

Jina, who is by Wings Of Eagles, might be one for those new junior development hurdles, while Richard Aston has had lots of enjoyment breeding from Whoops A Daisy, who we trained, and we are keeping a gorgeous unnamed Kapgarde filly out of her to race and hopefully breed from in the future.

We'll see the old Crimbourne Bloodstock colours carried by Verdana Blue on an unnamed Kayf Tara filly, who is out of her half-sister Whenskiesareblue. She's particularly promising, as are Jungle Wood and Lucky Place, who are by interesting sires in Cokoriko and Pastorius. They're doing well at stud and Lucky Place was one of our favourites at the sales, and we haven't got an owner for him yet.

A galaxy of stars, including Constitution Hill, Epatante, Jonbon and Shishkin, ensures Nicky Henderson will regularly be making headlines once again throughout this jumps season.

So many ‘horses of a lifetime’ have passed through Seven Barrows, it seems incredible that there could well be another two in Constitution Hill and Jonbon who potentially fit that description this term.

Henderson’s enthusiasm remains infectious, and it’s impossible not to read his comments in this Stable Tour without forming the conclusion that Firestep, Luccia, Royal Max and Walking On Air are four to keep emphatically on side.

On Firestep, Henderson says he “will be gutted if he isn’t near the top of the pile”, and he took a significant step forward on his second start in a bumper at Chepstow in March 2021.

While the bare form may be nothing to get excited about, the manner of his victory stamped him as potentially decent, and he starts his hurdling career unbeaten which is always a good sign.

Luccia, regarded as “special” by her trainer, provided one of those 'wow' moments that only come along several times each season, when she rapidly put 17 lengths between herself and Eabha Grace in a Sandown mares’ Listed bumper in March.

To my eyes, it was uncannily reminiscent of what Constitution Hill did to his novice hurdle rivals at the Esher track earlier in the campaign before proving himself a champion in the Grade 1 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham.

Royal Max, an “aeroplane”, according to Henderson, is another to follow, while Walking On Air, who has “unfinished business over hurdles”, created a fantastic impression at Newbury in January and it’s surely best to put a line through his subsequent defeat when sent off at just 9-2 in a Grade 1 Aintree novice hurdle.

He's not far off being back to his best. When he was second in the Leopardstown Grade 1 novice chase at Christmas two years ago, he and Felix Desjy went at it from flagfall. Feli Desjy dropped out of it with a mile to go but our fella kept at it. He ran two races in one that day and dug deep into his reserves, and I could never get him back to himself after it. We discovered at the end of last season he had a problem with kissing spines, which explains a lot as he wasn't jumping well. Gavin Cromwell looks to have a healthy mix of old reliables and nice young horses to go to war with this season. The setback of losing good chaser Gabynako after the Galway Plate is a tough one to overcome, but it could be compensated by the return of top bumper performer Letsbeclearaboutit, who may have what it takes to be a force in novice hurdles over two and a half miles or more.

Eyes will be on Flooring Porter, who looks set to return in the Lismullen Hurdle at Navan and will plot a familiar route towards a potential third straight win in the Stayers Hurdle. The rejuvenation of Darver Star this year has been a pleasant surprise, and his performance at Punchestown earlier this month showed him back close to his very best. Winning over as far as three miles and one furlong in August gave notice of his versatility, and he could be aimed at the Aintree Hurdle rather than the Champion Hurdle.

A spinal issue led to 2021 Albert Bartlett winner Vanillier not being as effective in the second half of last season over fences. The good staying handicap chases, including the Grand National, could well be within his compass this campaign.

Cromwell also has a number of unexposed youngsters with plenty of potential, and the best among them could well be novice hurdle prospect Path D'Oroux, who was a taking winner of a newcomer's bumper at the Punchestown festival in April. There is plenty to look forward to.

I don't suppose Willie gave a scoop in his RP stable tour as to whether Sir Gerhard will be going novice chasing?

Would also be interested if he outlined what races Capodanno might run in and what Energumene's campaign might look like.

Thanks in advance for anyone who can answer.

It says a lot about Willie Mullins' relentless ambition for success that, despite being Ireland's champion trainer for each of the past 15 seasons, he is still finding ways to scale new heights as he enters his 35th year with a licence.

Mullins bossed last season's festive period with 15 winners, featuring a surprise King George VI Chase triumph with Tornado Flyer, a hat-trick of domestic Grade 1s and a clean sweep of Leopardstown's Christmas bumpers.

Such dominance extended to the Dublin Racing Festival, where he mopped up seven of the 15 events on Ireland's premier weekend of jumping, but the best was still to come later in the spring.

The Closutton team emerged with an unprecedented ten winners at the Cheltenham Festival, bolstered by a spectacular 1,518-1 five-timer on the final day, and the Punchestown festival saw him notch another 14 successes. In total, he plundered nine individual Grade 1 winners across the final five days of the Irish season.

Exceeding such lofty standards would look a most unlikely challenge for most trainers, but Mullins is clearly hungry to keep building on another massive season last term, evidenced by purchasing a host of exciting new recruits from France, Britain, Irish point-to-points and bumpers.

There have been notable retirements for major prize-money earners over the past season. Al Boum Photo, Melon, Concertista and Stormy Ireland are no longer on the Closutton teamsheet, while the likes of Monkfish and Asterion Forlonge appear unlikely to figure in the opening half of the season. The Nice Guy, Redemption Day and James's Gate also look set to be on the sidelines this term.

However, there is considerable depth to Mullins' squad of youngsters, highlighted by the fact he has won no fewer than 81 bumpers in Ireland since the beginning of 2021.

With quality locked and loaded in each division, everything points to another colossal campaign for jump racing's biggest powerhouse.

He's made a nice start to his chasing career, winning at Listowel and Punchestown. We'll look to campaign him in staying novice chases and hope that he handles winter ground. Those ground conditions might not be his first love but we'll give him the opportunity to tell us. He'll be entered in the Drinmore Novice Chase at Fairyhouse over two and a half miles next month but probably wants further.

I'd imagine the King George at Kempton will be his early-season aim. We'll see how that goes and then my preference would be the Ryanair, but I haven't spoken to Cheveley Park yet. With them also having A Plus Tard for the Gold Cup, they might like to split them up. He'll have a couple of options to start off, possibly the Clonmel Oil Chase [on November 17] depending on whether the ground is right for him at the time.

He had a small problem last season and we decided not to go for a full campaign with him. He'll go novice chasing and I'd imagine with the sort of speed he's shown over hurdles, he'd have no issue going down the Arkle route, though he could be one for the Turners. It doesn't really matter to me whether he starts off at two miles or two and a half miles, we'll just wait for him and the right race to come along.

I've been really delighted with her work. I started working her a bit ahead of the others and she's really pleasing me. I'd say she'll be one of the first horses out for us ahead of this winter. She jumps well and is doing everything right at home so hopefully we'll be going down the mares' novice hurdles path.

He's only starting back in training as he picked up an injury in the Cheltenham Gold Cup. That run, in the circumstances, shows how good a horse he could be – he definitely has an engine. I'd imagine it'll be the last quarter of the season before he runs. He had complications while recovering so he's behind schedule but we got a good review from the vet the other day. We might be looking at the likes of Fairyhouse or Punchestown in the spring as opposed to Cheltenham in March.

He eventually got his big win at Cheltenham last season in the Festival Hunters' Chase and I'd imagine he'll take a similar path to the festival as last year. I like to give him a bit of practice because, as you saw at Cheltenham, he races lazily. It looked like he had no chance at the third-last there, and then he got into the race to lead late on.

She hasn't come back to us yet and is still in pre-training. We're going to aim her at the Mares' Hurdle at Cheltenham, rather than go chasing. Her form at Fairyhouse last season – beating Harry Fry's Love Envoi – must put her in with a favourite's chance for a race like that. Going left-handed is a lot easier for her. I won't be looking for right-handed races but sometimes you just can't help it and have to go right-handed if the right race is there. She seems very keen to stay left-handed, though.

Unfortunately he injured himself coming home after his second in the Ascot Stakes during the summer. He'll be one for the second half of the season and could have a couple of runs over hurdles. I think he's a Grade 1 horse and is good enough to go for the Cheltenham Gold Cup. I gave him an entry for Newbury in the Coral Gold Cup but it's probably speculative. We'll have a look at the weights first. He'll go down the staying Grade 1 chase route. I think I want nicer ground for him rather than real heavy, winter ground. He's a big horse and I'm not keen to run on this autumn good ground – I don't mind good in the spring, but he's one I'm looking for nice ground on nice tracks. I'd say JP McManus might favour Aintree for the Bowl but we'll let the horse tell us and see how the Gold Cup picture goes.

Stepping up in distance seemed to bring out the best in him when winning the Cork Grand National on Sunday. He'd been learning his trade and came good. I was delighted for Kieran Callaghan to head back to Cork and ride a big winner there, as the stewards didn't allow him to ride Stratum at the same track earlier in the year because he supposedly wasn't good enough. He had a very hard race at Cheltenham in the Supreme Novices' Hurdle [when falling at the third last] and then wasn't himself at Punchestown. He looks the type who should be a really good novice chaser. His style of jumping, his style of racing, you'd look at him as possibly being a top two-mile novice chaser. Over the past few years I haven't seen a horse that I'm looking forward to as much as Facile Vega. I'm all the time trying to keep him sound and thankfully he's been very sound, very good. He goes novice hurdling and with the turn of foot he showed in bumpers he'd be a Supreme Novices' Hurdle horse. With his pedigree, he can go out to be a Ballymore horse. My aim this year is not to work him too hard as he doesn't need it. David Porter rides him out and I keep telling him not to let me work him too hard. If we just get all this conditioning work into him, he'll be fine, and we'll get him away over hurdles as soon as we get nice ground. His jumping is very good. Like his mother, he's a natural.

We'll probably have to let him out in trip later on but if we can keep him to close to two miles I will. A nice new recruit from Pat Doyle. He was very good over hurdles in the second half of last season. He's a fine, big chasing type and has plenty of stamina to win over longer trips. I'd imagine with his style of racing we'll probably be aiming him at shorter trips and see how things go. He's very forward-going and I can see why Jack Doyle was so keen to cover him up in pockets in his races last season – it was the best way to settle him. He wants to get on with his job at home and can be difficult enough to ride, but I hope fences will help settle him down.

It was a great achievement for Patrick when he rode her to win a bumper at Sligo given he was also the winning owner and breeder. Considering she's got a nice pedigree, being out of an unraced half-sister to Yorkhill, and the manner of her debut win, she could be a Graded type. He's a big horse but doesn't look it – I love that about horses like him. He's so well proportioned and light on his feet. I never had a worry about the Gold Cup distance for him. I'd be fairly worried about Allaho getting the trip, but I'm not at all worried about Galopin Des Champs. I have that sort of faith in him. I'd like to start him off in the John Durkan but it's quite near to Christmas this year on December 11. A hugely exciting horse who came to us from France. We didn't run him last season after a small injury but he looks like he could be one of our top staying novice chasers. We'll keep an eye on the ground but I'd imagine it will probably be well into November before I start these novice chasers off.

He looked very impressive when winning on his only start over fences in a beginners' chase at Fairyhouse on New Year's Day. He's a huge horse with a huge engine. He's hard to keep right but we'll look for those Grade 2s and Grade 3s, races for second-season chasers. Maybe we'll stay away from the top grade until he gets a few runs under his belt. He could be anything going to Cheltenham.

I was absolutely delighted with his run at Down Royal on Saturday when runner-up to Envoi Allen in the Grade 1 Ladbrokes Champion Chase. He jumped a bit big early on but warmed to his task as he got going and put in a tremendous run. I imagine he will go to Leopardstown now for the Savills Chase, I doubt we will run before then. I was just very pleased with everything he did out there in conditions which did not really suit him.

I've had it in my head all the time to stay hurdling but in the last few weeks I've been thinking maybe we should go chasing with him. We're looking at the staying hurdle picture and the reason we might stay over hurdles is that it looks quiet enough, I think. He'd certainly be in the top three there, but he's a fine horse and jumps very well. He had an issue with his back a few years ago and that was one of the reasons why he stayed over hurdles then. He schooled very well over fences last season and we were very happy with him but he got a niggle when he was due to go chasing, which led us to go for the Stayers' Hurdle. I haven't fully made up my mind on him yet. I might give him another pop over fences and think about it.

He gave a great account when winning on his only start in a bumper at the Punchestown festival. He goes hurdling and with his pedigree, being a half-brother to Stayers' Hurdle winner Lisnagar Oscar, he looks a novice capable of tackling trips of two and a half miles and upwards.

I was happy enough with her first start over hurdles when second at Cork on Sunday. I was disappointed not to win but I think she got beaten by a very nice type in Inothewayurthinkin. She should prove her worth later on this season. I'll try to handpick her races with a view to ending up in the mares' novice hurdle at Cheltenham or the Grade 1 equivalent at Fairyhouse. The latter should be her main target.

He's back in training and I'm hoping I'll get him out this season but it's looking like that will be the second half of the campaign, or even the last quarter of it. If I can get him ready for Cheltenham, well and good, but I think a more realistic option might be somewhere after that. I'm going to go very steady with him – he hasn't made the type of recovery we were hoping for – so it will be going slow with him and seeing what happens.

He's a keen-going type who we've generally kept to mid-range trips, but I've been very happy with his last couple of runs and am tempted to step him up in trip this season. He takes a bit of riding, but if he relaxed more with age – as I think he should – we could put him in top races over a longer distance. We'll be experimenting with him a little this season. I was a little disappointed with some of his runs over hurdles as he missed some of them. At the start of the season I thought I was going novice chasing, but the more I look at the picture the more I'm tempted to stay hurdling. I've got to have a chat with his owners to get their views. There are pros and cons and my team are split on chasing or hurdling. I haven't ruled him out of a Champion Hurdle bid but we'll see.

We thought he'd be a nice novice chaser. He's one of those horses we're in two minds about in terms of chasing or hurdling. He's third or fourth favourite for the Champion Hurdle and it's easier to keep him sound for that, and his family tend to improve with age. We'll have to speak with connections. I had him and Sir Gerhard pencilled in as novice chasers at the start of the season, but as we near our kick-off point I'm beginning to question whether we should look at the Champion Hurdle for them. I think he's got the quality to be a Champion Hurdle horse. Whether he'll be good enough to win it I'm not sure, but I don't think we've seen the best of him at all.

He'll also get an entry for the Morgiana, which will be a tougher race, but I could find out where we're going against the older horses there. We've been happy with his jumping and he could be one for the Brown Advisory Novices' Chase. Ronnie O'Leary [who bought him as a three-year-old] would have done plenty of schooling with him as a youngster in case he was going down the point-to-point road.

Young talent
Lossiemouth, a three-year-old filly by Great Pretender out of Mariner's Light, won over hurdles at Auteuil in April and looks a really nice recruit. I'm very happy with how she's progressed since coming over.

I think Chapeau De Soleil, by Soldier Of Fortune and out of On Line Tara, could work into a top-class bumper horse. We bought him after winning a point-to-point for Colin Bowe last May. Cuta Des As, a gelding by It's Gino out of Negresse De Cuta, looks a smart point-to-point acquisition and he'll be campaigned in bumpers.

Castlebawn North, a half-brother to Castlebawn West by Califet, is another horse we're looking forward to this season. He'll start off in a bumper. An Almanzor gelding named Daddy Long Legs, out of Private Eye, is a nice acquisition from France and jumps very well. I might give him a couple of runs later in the season but I don't think I'll want him out too early. He's on a little break if he comes in around Christmas that might be fine, but he's taken naturally to hurdles and we're looking forward to him when he gets out.

Zarak The Brave, by Zarak and out of Tempo Royale, is another who is schooling well. He’s declared for a maiden hurdle at Fairyhouse on Tuesday and looks a nice three-year-old. He'll probably come out around Christmas, all being well. He looks a nice three-year-old. The Gunner Yeats, a gelding by Yeats out of Caitlin Brook, missed a good bit of last season but is back in full training now. He looks a very nice type who turns six in the new year. He'll probably be a bumper horse.

Tekao is a lovely horse we got from France. By Doctor Dino and out of Texaloula, he's a real hurdler in the making - a compact type who is unlikely to go chasing. He could start off around Christmas. Absurde, a Fastnet Rock gelding out of Incroyable, is on a break at the minute and we'll bring him back later in the season, or maybe even next season. He was quite racey looking when we got him off the Flat in France.

Two for the Tracker
I'm looking forward to seeing Il Etait Temps in the novice hurdling division, having shown promise as a juvenile last season in good company.

As for a novice chaser to watch, El Fabiolo is one I've always liked and I hope he can have a good season over fences.

Expert view
You don't need me to tell you that Closutton is sprinkled with more stardust than ever before right now.

Despite being without Al Boum Photo, Melon and Concertista (all retired) and The Nice Guy, Redemption Day and James's Gate (all injured) for the full season, as well as Monkfish for at least half of it, the stable is still responsible for a staggering 13 favourites or joint-favourites at the 2023 Cheltenham.

That, ladies and gentleman, is what we call strength in depth.

Willie Mullins seems to be speaking a different language to his usual dialect when it comes to Facile Vega.

"Over the past few years I haven't seen a horse that I'm looking forward to as much." That is not a sentence we have heard from the maestro before.

Facile Vega is only 2-1 across the board to provide Mullins with a record-extending eighth win in the Supreme Novices'. There is no juice in that price considering we are over four months away from the race.

The same cannot be said of Appreciate It in the Arkle, however. He's a big brute and built for fences and I cannot help thinking that if he didn't run in the Champion Hurdle last season, he would be 5-1 rather than 10-1 for the Arkle.

He strikes me as the most exciting novice chaser in the Mullins yard and it wouldn't surprise me to see him go through the season unbeaten.

Talk of Sir Gerhard and State Man staying over hurdles make that 10-1 look even more appetising. I know El Fabiolo could go down the Arkle path, but I think Appreciate It has more natural ability than he does.

Others who catch the eye in festival markets are Gaelic Warrior at 14-1 for the Ballymore and Gaillard Du Mesnil at 4-1 for the National Hunt Chase.

The Boodles runner-up looked to be crying out for further when just touched off by Brazil, while Gaillard Du Mesnil has National Hunt Chase winner written all over him and he is already rated 3lb higher than Stattler was going into that race last year.

There were 20 years in between Mullins' two King George winners, but back-to-back victories in the Kempton showpiece appear on the cards now that Allaho has been pointed in that direction. If he gets there in one piece 6-4 could look a massive price. He's likely to be odds-on come the day.

Mullins won 43 bumpers in Ireland last season so expect the novice hurdlers to carry all before them over the next few months. I loved what I saw from Lossiemouth at Auteuil in April and she could be anything. That 'anything' could include being a Triumph Hurdle winner.

The stable has already sent out 81 winners and we're only in early November, so it will be interesting to see how close Mullins gets to the 2017-18 score of 212. Could he even surpass it? He just might, you know.

I convinced myself with the price collapse in the Champ Bumper this is well thought of. Backed it for Albert Bartlett based on Willies strength in the other divisions.

Pleased to see he’ll be going novice hurdling (staying) and Ruby talked him up quite nicely on the Paddy Power preview last week. Be the next horse I follow off a cliff like the recently retired Abacadbras.

A dream horse bought for small money is primed to spark more wild celebrations at Cheltenham on Sunday after the syndicate owners of Dads Lad confirmed they had the Greatwood Hurdle (2.55) in their sights.

The Willie Mullins-trained ante-post favourite is rumoured to have cost a little more than the price of a decent second-hand car, a far cry from some of the sums paid in jumps racing and, by the sounds of it, not far off the bar bill after Dads Lad's win at Cheltenham's Showcase meeting last month.

The 5-1 shot is vying for favouritism with another Irish raider Thousand Tears in the £100,000 highlight of the final day of the three-day meeting that has attracted a staggering 81 Irish-trained entries.

Almost one in three horses entered for Friday's opening card represent Irish trainers, while they account for 23 per cent of entries across the three days.

Results at the Showcase would have provided plenty of encouragement to make the journey, with Dads Lad one of seven Irish-trained winners from 14 races after landing a valuable handicap chase decisively for the Whitegrass Racing Syndicate.

Although winless in his first six starts before joining the County Offaly syndicate, the seven-year-old has been a revelation since with six wins in a little more than a year, including four of his last five starts.

Syndicate manager Liam Cullinan said: "He's a dream horse for us. He was bought for small money and we're in complete bonus territory with him. We're expecting to run in the Greatwood as long as he works well this week, especially with the ground looking like being decent enough. The lack of rain in the forecast will probably be in his favour.

"It's a great pot to aim for but the handicapper hasn't missed him as he's 11lb higher over hurdles in Britain than Ireland. He's in the form of his life, though, and the ground looks suitable so it's worth taking a chance."

Connections invaded the Cheltenham winner's enclosure after last month's win off a chasing mark of 135 – 7lb higher than the mark he will race off over hurdles on Sunday – and there could be similar celebrations this weekend.

"It was probably as good a night as you'll ever see in the Jurys Inn in Cheltenham – that's all I can say," said Cullinan.

"We met the Dubai Cowboys Syndicate who own Shoot First [Pertemps qualifier winner on the same Cheltenham card for Charles Byrnes] so there ended up being two parties in the one spot. I can assure you the celebrations went on for a day or two when we got home too."

Conditions were described as good to soft at Cheltenham on Monday, with 5-7mm of rain due before Wednesday. The forecast suggests there will be little rain from Thursday onwards.

Cullinan added: "It's unlikely we'll get ground like this in Ireland for the time being so we're looking forward to rolling the dice. If it doesn't work out he can always be put away and come back for something like the Grand Annual in March."

Ireland's hopes of winning Saturday's Paddy Power Gold Cup (2.20) for the first time since Tranquil Sea struck in 2009 rest solely with big-race favourite French Dynamite, trained by Mouse Morris.

The 4-1 market leader with race sponsors Paddy Power is among 21 possibles for the £160,000 chase. Gordon Elliott, who had a double at the Showcase meeting, has seven entries over the three days, while John McConnell, who came away with a treble from the Cotswolds last month, is responsible for eight entries.

It'll be a big step up in class but he's set to run in the valuable Gerard Bertrand Hurst Park Handicap Chase at Ascot on November 19. He won't have the same experience as the others but he's on his way up the ladder.

She's a lovely looking mare who won her point-to-point. She then won at Aintree when we were hopeful of a good run and the first three went a long way clear. Instead of aiming at another bumper, we're looking forward to kicking on over hurdles over two miles in the middle of the month.

He started his season in a novice handicap chase over two miles at Uttoxeter but the trip was shorter than ideal and he wants the ground slightly slower. We were pleased with his jumping and he'll be better stepped up in trip. He came good in the spring last season and hopefully he can be progressive during his first campaign over fences.

He went novice hurdling last season and we were delighted with him. He finished third in the EBF Final at Sandown but he's always looked like a chaser and will have entries at Ascot and Exeter next week. We want to start over two miles and two furlongs or two and a half miles but he'll go up in trip.

She's a tough mare but probably showed her inexperience on her hurdles debut at Ffos Las. She stayed on well in bumpers so she needs a step up in trip. She's from a family full of winners and it hopefully won't be long before she gets off the mark over hurdles. She's entered at Exeter on Monday and Hereford on Tuesday.

He has so much potential. He won his first two starts but didn't run his race in the Grade 1 at Chepstow through no fault of his own. He jumps for fun and there's a valuable handicap hurdle for him at Exeter a week on Sunday over two miles and two furlongs. We wouldn't be afraid to go chasing with him and make the most of his four-year-old allowance.

She ended a frustrating run of seconds when winning over hurdles and put her experience to good use in a mares' novice chase at Worcester last time. She's eligible for the Great British Bonus races, so we'll target those, and she's going to run in the mares' novice handicap chase at Uttoxeter on Saturday. She's a course winner.

He won nicely on his reappearance at Newton Abbot and is in the Greatwood Hurdle at Cheltenham on Sunday and the Grade 2 novice hurdle on the same card. He's only a novice until the end of the month so our inclination is to make the most of that. We'll then try to aim him at the valuable two-mile handicap hurdles.

He galloped his rivals into the ground when he won his point-to-point and the runner-up [Ballykeel] won a maiden hurdle at Leopardstown in the spring. We didn't get the chance to run him last season because the ground dried out. He was fourth at Chepstow last week in what will probably work out to be a good maiden hurdle. He overraced but kept on well and would have appreciated the rain coming earlier.

He finished third in a Wincanton bumper on Boxing Day and a small setback ruled him out for the remainder of the season. The form of that race has worked out well with the winner [Shallow River] and the second [Shomen Uchi] going on to be successful. We'll try to get him out at the end of the month.

He travelled well and scored on his first start over fences. There's a valuable 3m handicap chase at Exeter for him on November 20. He seems to be on a good mark and should improve stepping up in trip.

He took a bit of a blow approaching the last at Ffos Las last time but did well to finish third. He'll be lightly raced this season as I can't wait to see him over a fence next year. He could be one for the EBF Final at Sandown in March, which has produced some good chasers.

She was three from three in novice company before a setback ruled her out of the Cheltenham Festival. She seemed to relish the step up in trip on her last start at Taunton. We'll look at a couple of options for her next week and she could run at Ascot on Friday week.

She doesn't set the world alight at home but she's answered every question on the track. She lost her unbeaten tag at Fairyhouse but had a busy campaign. She came in slightly late after a setback and we're considering our options before Christmas but will try to get her out this month. Then there's the Listed Mares' Hurdle at Sandown in January, a mares' hurdle at Warwick in February and hopefully she'll be in the Mares' Hurdle at the festival.

I saw it was soft and decided to run him in the November Handicap. He won nicely and was given a fine ride by Saffie Osborne. We might shelve the novice chasing plans because there may be more races for him on the Flat, including the Chester Cup. In the meantime, he can run in valuable hurdle races, such as the one at Lingfield he won last season. He needs conditions in his favour and is best when the mud is flying.

Might I

RPR 141h OR 142h
He's entered in the Betfair Exchange Stayers' Handicap Hurdle at Haydock over three miles on November 19. That will determine where he goes for the rest of his campaign. He's a half-brother to Stattler and will be stepped up in trip during the season, which we're excited about. He bolted up on his hurdles debut before bumping into Constitution Hill, Jonbon and Three Stripe Life.

He won over three miles last season and Sandown was probably a step too far for him. He then jumped for fun at Aintree on Saturday and looked like the winner before taking a blow approaching the last. We look forward to him hopefully going one better in a month's time.

He won well over three and a half miles at Taunton on his final start but will have to improve again off his mark. We'll hope to get him started in the next week or so with the view to going for the London National. He could then go for a National in the spring.

He's been third in the last two veterans' chase finals at Sandown and that will be his aim again. He'll hopefully run at the end of November in one of the veterans' races at either Leicester or Haydock.

She didn't win last season but ran well and we'll build a campaign around the Grade 2 mares' hurdle at Ascot, in which she was third in January. She'll start in the mares' handicap hurdle at Sandown next month, in which she finished second in 2020 and sixth last season.

Two for the tracker
We're excited by the prospect of stepping Might I up in trip, while How's The Cricket is starting at the right end of the handicap.

Expert view
It has become common to see jumps trainers winning big races on the Flat and Fry got in on the act last Saturday when Metier cashed in on a handy mark in the November Handicap at Doncaster. However, jumping remains Fry's bread and butter and he has a high strike-rate.

Since the start of 2017, Fry has struck with one in every five of his runners and that 20 per cent record stays the same over hurdles. However, he enjoys a 23 per cent strike-rate in bumpers and is a rare beast in that regard. His bumper runners outperform all his others.

Altobelli and Credrojava have both paid their way in bumpers and Jonathan Burke partnered Credrojava to her victory at Aintree last month. All six of Burke's mounts for the stable in bumpers finished in the first four and it's worth noting that when he rides in that type of race.

It's not just in bumpers where Burke's record for the yard is good, either. The rider is 29 per cent overall when joining forces with Fry and that is a higher strike-rate than Sean Bowen, albeit Bowen is still operating at 21 per cent from a much bigger sample of runners.

The most exciting horse in the yard is Love Envoi, who won the mares' novice hurdle at Cheltenham last season and is as tough as they come. She lost her unbeaten record in a Grade 1 at Fairyhouse last time, but that was after a hard race at the festival and she is better than that.

All roads are likely to lead back to Cheltenham and she could rack up a few wins on the way.
