Bit surprising Benbens got awarded the 4.15 yesterday. No doubt he was impeded but unusual for a 2.5 length verdict to be overturned.

Only saw the race on ATR this morning with no head on so no idea of the extent Dolatulo lugged across but surprised at verdict.

Thoughts?

Two points - the distance beaten is largely immaterial, as Benbens was withing half a length when all but brought down by the rail dolling off the water jump, but the crucial point for me is that Dolatulo didn't move across a single inch. Stratford is one of several tracks (throw in Aintree, Newbury, Ludlow, Perth and Huntingdon) where the water jump is bypassed on the run-in, meaning that the runners take an unusual line from the last fence.

There appears to be no rule about if and how the racing line should be altered on such tracks, though, so it seems that the leader in such circumstances is entitled to keep a straight line, and those who wish to challenge need to either switch outside the hazard or force their way across. It's highly unsatisfactory, but I believe it's completely out of order to disqualify a winner who has led over the last and simply held his line from that point. As usual, the authorities have been found sleeping on the job, despite the fact that there have been a plethora of near misses in the past.

Most outrageous disqualification since Royal Gait. This is a blatantly illogical decision -the appeal should be heard before Aintree because it has implications for races over the National fences.

Thanks fellas I hadn't appreciated the nature of the run-in. I backed Benbens in the race so decent outcome for me but would be appealing if I was Greatrex

Absolutely the correct decision-worst disqualification since Royal Gait-the people involved should be sent for retraining at the very least.
