You lot on here can be pretty inventive at times, so here goes.....

I'm keeping a bitch pup (Weimaraner) and need some help with naming her. I'd like to have a name associated with P G Wodehouse but can't find a site which lists all his female characters! Her brother wot I will also be training up is going to be Bertram.

Thought about Gussie Fink-Nottle and it might be amusing for about 10 minutes but yelling that on a working day a few times would become tedious.

She will join Constance and Hattie and Molly.......

The 'Aunts' Agatha and Dahlia are the only characters I can think of off the top of my head Songsheet.

Just as a matter of interest I've got a ten month old Weimeraner dog who is a complete nutcase and as thick as two short planks. Add to that the fact that he runs at the speed of a cheetah and has the co-ordination of a baby elephant he's still a bit of a handful!

Do they calm down and get any brighter!

They do calm down, Maruco, you'll be pleased to hear but usually not until they are at least three! Unless they have a job to do that is, when they are altogether much pleasanter to have around....

Strange you say he's a thicko - I've only ever had one dumb Wei dog and he was rather pleasant to live with! Usually they are horribly canny (intelligent is stretching it) and out to please themsleves.

One of my maxims when explaining to folk interested in having a puppy is that if they want a relaxing dog, don't get a Weimaraner!

OK, but first I have to point out to those who aren't aware of the delights of Wodehouse that Gussie Fink-Nottle is a man.

The most regular female characters in the Jeeves books are probably Aunt Dahlia, Aunt Agatha and Madeleine Bassett. A bit boring though to have one of the Aunts and Madeleine would be the wrong breed.

Then you could have Emerald Stocker or Daphne Dolores Morehead (and I'm sure that Plum when naming the latter had no Bond-like pun in mind).

But I think that the best name is Stiffy Byng. Stiffy (for Stephanie) was played in the Richard Briers radio series firstly by Miriam Margolyes and later by Denise Coffey.

I can just imagine you walin through the local woods and teling someone you're looking for Stiffy...

Agatha , Dahlia , Florence Craye, Madeleine Bassett , Rosie M Banks, Honoria Glossop for a start

No he's definitely not the brightest in the bunch, but the upside is that he's very eager to please, and he has a fantastic temperament, and perhaps not as typically strong-willed as is general with the breed.

You could be right about the second Aunt being called Madeline not Agatha Brian. I guess the old grey matter aint what it used to be. Stiffy may well have been a more apt name for my dog though with the phase he's going through at the moment!

Catsmeat is of course also a man .His love was Gertrude Winkworth.

Maruco - Madeleine Bassett is the long loved fiancee of Gussie Fink Nottle not an aunt . Everytime they had a tiff she would announce that she would marry Bertie - which would upset the Oswald Mosley character Lord Sidcup .

The two aunts were Agatha and Dahlia.

How about Cora Bellinger , the opera singer and the ghastly Bobbie Wickham strongly disapproved of by Jeeves.

I've got a Molly, too!  Great minds, eh....  :D
Do you believe in backing horses because of their name SL, it may pay to do so on Sunday but you'll need to get into the "Spirit" of things.

She's made a fortune out of VODKA BLEU, while I lament not making more use of the late and lovely FAMOUS GROUSE.

We had a running topic a long time ago, using horses' names to make up a story. It was amazing how many of us managed to develop a lengthy alcohol theme with the likes of THE BARMAID, OVER THE BAR, VODKATINI, BISHOP'S FINGER, let alone THE STAGGERY BOY... named in honour of Gearoid, I believe. :D

A friend has a Weimaraner dog, and he is the most handsome chap with a great temperment, (he follows her 3year old daughter round like a shadow, and she feeds him as if hes her best friend!). Theres many a time we'll find them tucked up on the sofa fast asleep together! You can hardly take him anywhere without crowds of people commenting on how stunning he is.

What about Lucy, Jules? As in Lucy Lastick, etc., etc? Somewhere, in a lifetime many years ago, I recall reading that animals respond best to names which end in the 'ee' sound. I don't know why, but apparently either that, or a short sharp vowel in a name, like 'Tom', is best for giving and understanding commands. Is this true?

I do like Lucy and of course you're right about names ending in 'ie' or 'y' being better to call.

Jon has just spent a couple of days kidnapping my mutts for rambles around the farm while I was working. My mutts think she is a Goddess and miss their extra walks already!

My first Wei was four when my son was born and he was probably a very spoilt dog - I showed and field trialled him and he was a very big winner, so you can imagine how much I adored him, as he had the loveliest temperament and being my first dog..... Everyone warned me - quite rightly - that he might be jealous of the baby etc etc but quite the reverse - he would have died for Giles !

I never left them alone, of course, while G was small but Quince quite happily let himself be used as a baby walker when G started toddling and they used to curl up together for naps!

Weimaraners appear to be a breed folk either love or loathe - maybe it's the light eyes and the grey coat - but having now had a couple of other breeds, they'll always be my favourite!

Why call it anything? Why not just ignore it?

the most important Weimaraner in history was J.W. von Goethe.
the most important women of his many years in Weimar were:
Charlotte (lover)
Christiane (wife)
Bettina (rejected young lover)
Ottilie (daughter in law)
Alma (grandchild)

giving your little dog one of this would give her poetic aristocracy!

Excellent suggestions by Wassermusik - I like Ottilie too but try it after a few too many glasses of red wine Toots before you choose it .

Thank you for the suggestions, Wasser! I like Ottilie too but that would get shortened to 'Tilly' and one of my broodmares has that name!

I have decided to call her Lily - though knowing me, she'll end up with at least two other names as well ! "Lilo Lil" will no doubt be heard ringing through through the woods this coming winter....

Honestly, that Tom - you never know which one is posting these days....
