Nearly every evening at sometime after 8.30pm I lose my BT Broadband signal which effectively cuts me off until next morning when I find that at some time during the night it has reinstate itself. I have been in communication with BT for THREE MONTHS and they cannot seem to offer any explanation. Their help line is useless not to mention a premium rate line, as is their e-mail service. I have even had a new modem etc under warranty but the problem remains. Does anyone have any idea why a broadband signal should disappear like this ?

DG, what make of modem/router are you using? It's just that my router is out of it at home currently ( a NETGEAR DG834GT. do not buy one whtever you do !! ), and reading through forums trying to isolate the problem, some people are experiencing difficulties with modems overheating. If you leave it switched on all day, it could be that it overheat's sometime around 8:30, and so loses connection. If it cools down enough, it may well pick up sometime overnight. Just a thought.

You're not going to believe this Dave, but I have exactly that make/model of router and it died a few weeks ago. The only possible explanation I could come up with was overheating.

I agree with Dave, it is most likely overheating. It may be a basic flaw in the router design but make there is plenty of room to allow air to circulate around the router.

I had a hard disc fail last year due to to it getting too hot as I left it on 24/7. I had a much more powerful fan installed in the PC box and now leave plently of room around the box for the air to circulate. My wireless router sits on top of the PC box just above the fan and thus stays cool.

Btw I use BT broadband and it has improved beyond recognition over the last 3 years.

Gareth, if it's overheating, you can try using the stand to stand it on it's side, and make sure there is plenty of air circulating. Mine isn't due to overheating. It has all the correct lights on, but will not see the WAN ( internet to the un-initiated ). I have tried resetting, re-installing ( this fails miserably ), upgrading firmware versions, all to no avail. The strange thing is, when I connect my old asdl modem to the laptop and connect that wy, I can switch the router on, disconnect the modem, and carry on surfing! It makes no sense at all, but looking at the public forum linked from the netgear site, there are plenty of disgruntled users out there, and the "helpdesk" is situated in India, and as much as I hate to say it, the people on the other end of the lines don't have a sodding clue what they are going on about. :teeth:
I've just put a bid in for a cheap belkin pre-N router.

Just don't waste your time phoning the help line. You have better things to do with your life, believe me!

D/G….You might verify that your modem has it's own IRQ not shared with any other device.

The best way to do that is right-click My Computer, Properties, Device Manager, Double Click on my Computer at the top (this will vary a bit for different versions of windows, but you should be able to find it). Your modem should be the only thing with whatever IRQ it's assigned. Don't worry about "IRQ Holder for PCI steering"………………

OR AND

The Modem MAY BE! installed twice. This could only be seen in Safe Mode…………..

If you run WINFAX changing modem settings in WinFax from "hardware controller" to "software controller" will also effect this…………
I got rid of all my SYMANTEC stuff on here NORTONS ETC .......

Worth having a look mate nothing ventured nothing gained as the old adage goes???

D/G what windows version you using etc etc give me some details please.....

Right everyone I use Windows XP Home Edition, I have Norton Internet Security which was disabled during the installation of the software. I am fairly confident it is nothing to do with this. The modem is a Voyager 105 as supplied by BT ( a new one supplied under warranty a few weeks ago) which has not resulted in any difference incidentally. I don't think it's overheating but how can you be sure, it's cold to the touch right now !
I have had a line check done, nothing shows up, replaced micro filters, modem etc
replaced USB cable, uninstalled and reinstalled software several times, set up the connection manually and via software absolutely nothing affects things. I calculated how much I had spent on the BT helpline at 50p a minute and contacted their customer services ( after listening for fifty minutes to someone telling me "Your call is important to us") who agreed to cancel all charges as they had not helped at all.
My initial twelve month contract is up on October 1st and I shall be changing ISP, anyone got any recommendations ?

D/G have you got too much security (you only have X/P firewall enabled I hope? if you have both of them enabled this is another likely cause ) if not I would point my finger at SYMANTEC(i.e. NORTONS) as I said earlier its conflicting with the modem???? :o

Off-topic but I thought I would share this piece of information with you all.

BT Broadband offer a few different packages. They start with BT Broadband Basic at £17.99 and you get 1GB of usage per month. If you go over that usage you are charged depending on how far over you go. If you go over 1GB but not over 3GB, you are charged and extra £4. If you go over 3GB but not over 6GB, you are charged an extra £8. If you go over 6GB, you are charged an extra £12.

They also do BT Broadband Classic which is £24.99 and you get 15MB usage and you can get 30GB usage with their highest BT Broadband package for £29.99

You can't go over 30GB without being charged extra.

However, if you have BT Broadband Basic and use 50GB in a month, you'll be charged £17.99 plus £12 for going over an additional 6GB.

Unlikely that most folk would use 50GB in a month, but the point is, why pay £29.99 for 30GB when you can pay £29.99 for unlimited usage.

Hope you followed that.

For £15.99pm I get 1mg speed plus more than enough of a limit for my use and free evening and weekend phone calls. (Tiscali)

It is quite amazing when you look at the better deals offered by other companies.

Ironic when you consider they all get their broadband services from BT Wholesale and re-sell it to the public.

So, if you are on Tiscali for example, you are basically getting the service from BT.
