I'm starting to assemble a number of selections to put in Ante Post multiples for Cheltenham and am thinking of adding Teaforthree to win the National at 33/1. Will be 9yo when the race is run handles full range of going and stays well.

Am I nuts or missing something as the price seems too good imo? Advice welcomed.

I've had a look, form obviously looks very strong, as a second season chaser currently rated 146 I'm just wondering how they will, (and if they will), try and preserve its handicap mark? Run it in some handicap hurdle races perhaps? And will the fact its run several times at Chepstow mean the Welsh National will be first priority and the National an afterthought (ditto if he does run well at Chepstow and then the mark rises for Aintree).

Given the favourites are usually priced about 20/1 this time of year I guess 33/1 is about right.

Don't second season chasers have a poor record in the race?
It's certainly logical that they might.

Betting on the Grand National at this stage makes little sense to me. Betting antepost for Cheltenham, you always have the possibility you could have a 3/1 horse running for you that you backed at 20s. The GN market leader is nearly always available at double figures on the day or in the weeks beforehand, so the reduction factor of price you bet at versus hoped for day of race price is nowhere near good enough for me.

If you want to do multiples, I would personally stick to Cheltenham or Paddy Power, King George etc.

"He was our first Cheltenham winner and that was a brilliant experience. It was also fantastic for everyone connected with the stable, who have worked so hard to achieve this memorable moment. Of course we will not be happy with just one major success and we are continuing to build upon this superb achievement. Last season Teaforthree won on three of his six starts. His other two wins came at Chepstow in December and February. He loves to race at this Welsh venueand really enjoys the undulations and jumping fences. I will probably give him an entry in The Welsh Grand National, as he should relish the trip and if it came up heavy he would have no problems with conditions. In the long-term I will also put him in the Aintree Grand National. He does act on genuine good or good to soft ground, but he jumps really well and can handle quick conditions."

The other point is if he were to run in the Welsh National and run well/win it, that would bugger his handicap mark for Aintree.

After Hedgehuntet fell at the last in the GN I promised myself I would have a few quid on every week for the next year and go for a real touch.
As things turned out when he won the following year I didn't have a penny on him.For me the National is a good race to punt on ante post despite the victories of Neptune Collonges and Mon Mome it's a punter friendly race.

I did exactly the same with Always Waining as Peter Bowen stated his intentions were to run the horse in the Grand National which had he won it would have paid for a nice holiday. It was heartbreaking to watch him win his third Topham with ease the day before thinking what might have been - only consolation was the profit on that race covered my stakes and enough for a night out but holiday was cancelled. :D

A least a topical thread with the announcement coming out the next day.

Thanks for several helpful responses, weight, betting patterns, 2nd year chaser stats and the rest. Looks like I should back him for the WGN and see what happens after. Not one for the multiples but should they be successful I can reappraise the position.

The responses, and the announcement certainly formed the basis of my decision and when he wins the National as 6/1 fav. I'll know who to blame.
Seriously my apprecation to all.

Hopefully he can win the Welsh National, I'd be surprised if there were any quotes of above 10-1 for that race when the betting opens probably in early December (?). It's a race I've picked the odd winner in in the past, and from a betting point of view always fascinates me more than the indecipherable Grand National.

Best of luck.
