Hi guys

I am unable to play DVDs on my laptop, I get the following error message from Realplayer

The DVD cannot be played. Key exchange for DVD copy protection failed.

any help would be appreciated

Is the dvd an original, or a copy? Is it region 2 ( Europe ). It sounds like either your laptops dvd drive, or the dvd itself is not region 2. Try downloading dvd43 which forces to ignore copy protection.

DVD43

This document applies to:

- RealPlayer 10

You will receive a "Key exchange for DVD copy protection failed" error message if your computer's decoder software is corrupt, if your video card or sound card does not support DVD protection, or if the DVD cannot be played in your region.
Solution 1: Update your decoder software.

Contact your DVD drive manufacturer for the latest version of DVD decoder software.
Solution 2: Confirm that your video card and sound card support DVD protection.

Contact the video or sound card manufacturer to make sure that the latest version can display Macrovision copy protection.
Solution 3: Make sure that the DVD can be played in your region.

DVDs will play only on players using the same region country code as the actual discs. Please read Why do I receive region errors when playing DVDs with RealPlayer? for more information.

Thanks Guys. I have tried to use both Realplayer and Windows Media, I can get sound on Realplayer but nothing on Windows. I have emailed Dell to help. I think I might have deleted an important piece of software when looking through my files and deleting anything I didnt use, oops!!!

Sorry, Media Experience as they like to call it......

It's handy to use as you can use the buttons on the front of your laptop (under the catch) as shortcuts.

Hang on - have you tried pressing the button on the front at the end marked "MediaDirect"? It launches the Dell Media Experience (!!) and hey presto - away to go!

On a similar line, a friend of mine burned me a couple of DVDs recently but when I try to play them, they replay as audio only (on WMP). Any ideas ?

Doesnt work Dom, I think you might be right, I probably had a brainwave along the lines of "hey, i've got realplayer so I don't need this so I can delete it"

As above

OOPS

All credit to DELL, we are on the 4th email with different solutions to this problem and they are very prompt in responding. It seems to take only 6 hours to get a technical advice email which is great service. Fingers crossed this next mail will solve the problem

Ok, still need some help please folks. I have determined that I have deleted MediaDirect from my PC, however when I try to re-install from the CD it says that it is still installed. I have done a check via "add/remove programs" and there is nothing listed for Media Direct, I don't want to have to re-boot my whole PC

Sounds like you will have to trawl through the registry and delete any entries for it. Be VERY careful about what you do though.

If I do a search for MediaDirect and delete everything it brings up will that work?
You can do that but it won't delete the registry entries..

to do that type REGEDIT into the run box, and find it that way.

Have you tried this...

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/...1&fileid=148039

Dell MediaDirect Repair Utility

Web release for Dell MediaDirect Repair Utility tool. The tool will restore MediaDirect function after user breaks the system MBR by manual re-install the operation system.

Hope that helps.
