I have Netgear G Router and a BT HomeHub2 which I use for my wireless connection to interweb.

After some injudicious ending of unknown applications my connection has ceased to function. The adaptor shows up as working ok in my Hardware Manager and the HomeHub is responding to pings - but neither seems to know they are there anymore.

A message comes up saying Wireless Networks detected, but the refresh comes back saying No Wireless Networks Detected.

Before I enter into conversation or puchases I don't need to - can anyone assist?

I have tried resetting the router a few times and also uninstalling the adaptor and re-installing.

First question - do you run XP? If so then I would suggest using the settings on the Netgear software to connect via Windows and not run using Netgear. I had similar troubles with a belkin wireless adapter in a laptop and that always solved it.

From a quick search it sounds like you arent alone with this problem - HH2 seems to have a bit of a bad rep :) Most suggestions involve resetting router and/or hardwiring to reinstall software so maybe googling "netgear router homehub help" might give a bit more assistance.

Otherwise call BT - Bob in Bangledesh will ask you several times what the problem is and repeat your answer (and all has to be done before 8pm because thats when they shut!) but they should be able to diagnose the problem which sounds like the software programs arent talking to each other.

If they are causing real problems - suggest telling them you are fed up of the problems and are going to switch providers (and to be honest I havent had a days problem with my Sky broadband since it was installed 4yrs ago!) They will probably then offer you a few months free for the hassle hehe

If you intend calling BT I suggest you prepare a plateful of sandwiches and a flask of coffee and don't forget the Calms. They are truly feckin unbelievably awful. You will probably travel the planet, certainly the sub-continent and Ireland.

I have officially ended all contact with BT.

Every time their ads. come on the box my BP goes through the roof.

Thats exactly why I left BT - the router broke and the w-an-ker on the other end asked if I knew which end of the cable I was holding as it was likely I had put the wrong end in so I told him very politely to eff off as I had just helped install a 6 pc office network and probably knew more about IT than him so could he please just send me the new router!! (And its also impossible to put the wrong end in of a ethernet cable as they are identical!)

Try the non-BT netgear forums they will generally be more helpful (and honest!)

I'm losing the will to live. I have an Asus Intel pemtium laptop working off windows 7 that packed in last night. I believe my hard drive has gone down. The message I get is - ACHI Port0 Device Error. I can't find the windows CDrom that came with the laptop. Is there anything I can do bar send it to a repair shop? It's two years old. Should I but my loses and buy a new one?

Uninstall and delete the device drivers attached to that port. Windows 7 should search for them, find them and reinstall them for you.

I don't really know what I'm talking about so wait for someone clever to confirm this makes any sense. I've had a problem with a printer and a CD drive that was solved by doing this. Although I did a few things at the same time with the CD drive so it may not have fixed that.

Edit:Just thought, you probably can't start the machine so above is a waste of time.

Id say the drive is knackered - do you know which manufacturer it is? They may have some tools available to perform some basic repairs eg. SeaTools for Seagate (http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools)

If you need to repalce the disk, before you do you can create a disk image of the current one in Windows 7 under Control Panel > Backup and Restore, and then in the left pane "Create a system image". You'll also need to "Create a system repair disk" in order to boot and restore the image you create to the new disk if required

There are rescue packages around - you download them & burn to CD (obv. on another pc), then boot from that ... useful for rescuing files?

Thanks for the replies. Will try and fix it but I think its dead anyway. The laptop is over two years old so not the end of the world. Why should I switch to a Mac Granger?

I paid around €700 for it. Not worth insuring. What I would have paid in premiums by now would be the same as the cost of fixing it.

They are practically bombproof

PS do you use ur laptop in bed alot or did you notice the fan being much louder of late. Overheating the CPU is a major laptop killer

I normally keep it tilted at a good angle to let the air flow underneath but not this time. Seriously frustrating because I can't operate without it.

Get nozzle on vaccuum and just graze over the vents underneath. Look at the amount of crap it will suck out over a couple of mins.

If washing it only use childrens shampoo and be sure to rinse well under warm water. Some of those electronic do-das can be very sensitive.

Under the banner of tech help....

I have a 2nd hard drive on my desktop and having formatted the 'main' drive due to an unholy amount of crap on it, the 2nd hard drive is not now showing me the data on it...

If I go in to the "computer management" "disk managment" i see both hard drives with capacities of 279gb & 186gb (2nd drive) but when i explore this 2nd drive it shows me 4gb capacity...

Any ideas why the data is hidden or how to access it?
