I saw a 2 year old on Saturday who whilst in his box kept making a grinding sound with his teeth, there was no worker around at the time to help with my question but the horse was un-named and looked very placid/sad.

Is this sort of thing natural for 2 year olds? and are these good or bad signs?

I think boredom/anxiety are the strong contributory factors, and a habit similar to crib biting. I have only ever experienced this on one occasion but he seemed a more angry/bored sort of animal. The amount he did it also seemed to fluctuate with his work regime and whether he was anxious/agitated.

Thanks for the reply Toobe,

Yeh i felt really sorry for the horse like I could just cuddle him, maybe I am just a big softie.

Some how I dont think you are! If you are male and looking at the chest all the time I mean!
