Some internet forums have chosen to ban textspeak , indeed to me it reads like garbled nonsense -" how r u "on a phone is one thing but " b4 u go m8 " is quite another . I must admit I really don't like it and would much rather it was not used .

A forumite has sent me a PM asking whether textspeak could be banned .

Any views ?

I don't like it and tend to ignore posts that use it but I don't see how we can ban it shrug::

I tend not to use it when I'm texting either but since I only text about five times per year, it's no big deal.

I hadn't noticed it on here much either. The younger generation are much more likely to use it I would have thought, and the more of the younger generation we get on here the better. If the text speak then gets out of control, we could always set The Gatebitch on them. :suspect:

You and the reporting forumite are scraping the barrel with this one.

I can't stand it although I haven't noticed it being used on here very much. I don't understand why it's so frequently used in text messages either - surely it's just as quick to turn your predictive text on and spell a whole word properly?

I have to admit that I would prefer it wasn't used on here but it would be asking for trouble if we banned it! And it's purely a matter of preference anyway - there's nothing inherently wrong in using it other than sheer laziness, I suppose.

Predictive text is when your mobile suggest words for you to choose from when you start texting each word. Mine suggests four possible options after I key in the first two letters of each word and the drop down list changes with possible options as I enter more letters of the intended word.

It has nothing to do with laziness, it's all about speed. Lots of people are wary of change and things outside their comfort zone. I never use it personally but if I don't understand it that's my problem.

..............or prhps a SOH!

It was I who PMd Ardross in a not too serious post, I also suggested that peeps who spelt definitely with an 'A' should be sentenced to be shot at dawn! :shy:

I don't think it is lazy, can't believe it makes much difference to the time it takes to type but it does seem to be perceived as modern.

To me it seems unnecessary and does nothink for peoples spelling.

Shall we ban dyslexics as well? And what about banning anyone who makes a spelling mistake?

As annoying as it is, you can't really justify banning it.

COLIN PHILLIPS! Put this 'D' cap on and stand in the crnr 4 5 min!! "Does nothink for peoples spelling" - :angy: One appalling spelling mistake AND a missing apostrophe in ONE small rant?? Ooh, stones, houses, glass...

Textspeak is absolutely of the least possible interest to me. I can choose to ignore it or request the remark be made over in normal script if I can't understand it.

It makes me laugh, fair enough words like "u" and "r", but words like "woz" and others similar are just stupid.

I get text messages from my staff (much younger than me) that I have occasionally had to get translated, Ii don't speak text but I don't think it should be banned on here

When it comes to all things grammar, this forum is comparable to a Nazi state..
We're simply sharing our knowledge of grammar, usually in a jocular manner. Hopefully some people will learn from it and improve their literacy and communicative skills.

That should be 'when it comes to all things grammatical... ' as grammar is the noun, while 'grammatical' describes 'all things'.
