21 entries in this and, to my own surprise, I find myself interested in Farandaway (33/1 generally and may get bigger) if he turns up with a racing weight (weights out tomorrow).

He's only a Maiden, but I think the sixth furlong at Catterick Bridge last time out may have found him out and this world's fastest five might see him to better effect.

I saw you'd replied and was looking forward to a 500-word reply, replete with spread sheets, overall and sectional time figures, going maps, weather forecasts, wind speed directions and yet more gratuitously-critical comment on my diet!

Disappointed doesn't even come close!

Game of opinions - I love Epsom Downs and have done since I first went there in 1985 the day Slip Anchor won The Derby.

Great course to walk too.

There really is no accounting for taste.

Those who think it's a ridiculous course probably best not bet on races there - after all, they know the configuration of the track before they do.

But then some slate a jockey (and maybe trainer) after a suspect ride when they knew who was riding and training the horse when they struck the bet.

Funny old game.

I'm speaking specifically about The Dash. All the hype every year, "fastest 5f in the world' and absolutely no substance to it.
 
I've never been to an actual race day at Epsom but have been to a couple of open days though. Facilities seemed adequate and certainly a pleasant enough venue in my opinion.

I agree hype is tiresome, but no substance? Not so ...
The fastest recorded 5f, according to the Guinness Book of Records, was set in the Dash in 2012.

Don't get me wrong, you're perfectly entitled to your view (as you know) and many would agree with you.

But I love the 5f at Epsom Downs - such a contrast to the 5f at a track like Beverley, for example.

And I'm sad Epsom Downs no longer name a race at 5f after Indigenous.

I actually backed the Dash winner last year at something like 16/1 before it was heavily bet.

But that was the original, not this 3yo version they've added.

Nothing wrong with swerving betting in races you consider ridiculous, hence a lottery.

I can totally relate to that.

It’s downhill! I’d be disappointed if it didn’t have the record. Time doesn’t equal quality. It’s a mad race—I get that it has some nostalgia, but as a viewing experience or betting medium? No thanks

Fair enough, that made me chuckle! You are right of course, it should hold the record being downhill. And that exposes the hype.
It is fun to actually be there, though.
 
I would doubt if anyone thinks the world record holder at 5f is the best sprinter around - Stone Of Folca certainly wasn't and Indigenous wasn't either.

If they want that - and a new world record - they should hold a Summer Group 1 5f race there and lock CoC Andrew Cooper in a cupboard to stop him watering the week of the meeting. 😂
