“Never bet in handicaps” was the advice Alex Bird gave me when I was a young sprog (he was a friend of my dad’s). Nonetheless the Grand National was one of his big betting races of the year because he could rule out most of the field who wouldn’t manage the fences and he then played the odds with what he had left. Can’t do that today now that the fences hold no fears.
