Seeing the "POW" takes me back to 1980 when Stanerra won it and came out again on the Friday and won the Hardwicke too.

The surface on Ascot High Street wouldn't have been much Firmer that year.

Different world now and, though the weather forecast is looking decent after Saturday, watering remains the modern concern.

There's a trainer who I feel historically wields influence when it comes to watering at big Ascot meetings - ascertaining what the key runners from his yard want, surface wise, can sometimes be instructive in terms of working out whether his lobbying will be for "taps on" or "taps off."

Hunt Cup - see other thread

POW - See The Fire 7/1 She hasn't been the most consistent.. I'm ignoring plenty like runs on the wrong going or 1st time out efforts. Last time out was impressive and being supplemented suggests she has come out of the race well and ready to go again.
I like the fav but always had him down as a 12f horse. He is tough but only beat White Birch narrowly despite that one not really getting his going and hard luck in running and Anmaat on seasonal debut. This track is not such a long home straight as the Curragh and decent going could leave him open to those with a turn of foot. On his favour is he'll get first run so maybe luck in running could count against those in behind. It was a tosseup between Anmaat or See the Fire. I think See the Fire could follow Anmaat and catch him cold stalking Los Angeles

I've added Society Kiss in the opener to my other bets Wed (Anmaat and Fallen Angel). She's a course and distance winner and a tracker alert (started taking more notice of the 2yos now) and isn't this Zelaina thing too short? Wasn't there a 2yo the other year who everyone went bulu over after he won impressively at Ripon and he ended up being a bit meh? Zelaina only won at Nottingham, 7/4 seems a stretch.

Take out the Hunt Cup (would be better spoonerised) and the POW and it's a pretty crappy card.
For myself today was much more interesting from a studying form point of view than tomorrow.
Apart from the Hunt Cup I'll be picking nice/cheeky names or following others fancies.

Prince of Wales market looks all wrong to me. I have it between Anmaat and the French horse. Los Angeles is a boat, Sea the Fire beat listed class fillies at York and the rest are outclassed. Very strong on the Shadwell horse and have Map of Stars in a couple of protection doubles.

George Weaver has previous at this fixture and I like a couple of his 2yos this week at double-digit prices.

The first is Tough Critic, who didn't seem particularly fancied on debut, got messed around at the start, raced in rear then picked up well enough to lead late over 5f110yds at Keeneland:

For this against-the-collar five, I find that profile preferable to some speedball who will fly out the gates, but might not get home.

Generally 14/1 at the moment, I think.

I've just had a look at yesterday's race times (which I wasn't paying attention to during the racing) and they're pointing to perfect racing ground, an average of only 0.11s slow per furlong and that would be skewed slightly by the ridiculously slow pace in the Queen Anne and the modest pace in the Ascot Stakes.

I'm usually very quick to criticise CoCs but in this case they've got it just about right and it's making for brilliant racing. Pity it's the arseholes on the horses' backs who are not shining, generally speaking.

Still, thanks to Gstaad (5/1 taken), Haatem (8/1) and a few place returns I'm nicely in front going into day 2 with a win double from Field Of Gold going on to Cinderella's Dream (paying 9/2 if successful) I'm hopeful I'll still be in front at the end of the day and hopefully by a wee bit further, luck and good jockeyship permitting.

So a toast as I munch my toast: may all your bets today be winning ones. Cheers.

By the way, Haatem was another win for striding data. I wasn't sure about it at the trip but the striding data suggested it might improve for it so I took a wee gamble on it. Worth keeping an open mind about the stuff.

I have or did have a nice double in pocket - Oklahoma City Thunder (NBA Championship)/Field of Gold (Eclipse) at 7/4 and 7/1 respectively. Looks like that's down now unfortunately.

I managed to finish level on day one thanks to King's Gambit placing and Poniros finishing out the back of the tele (I have no idea why he was in that race, had almost zero chance of staying) so today we go with:

Society Kiss
Fallen Angel (drifted to 5.7 on the machine)
Anmaat
