The 'colour bar' which might be a term not known to young forumites, is still thriving in certain non-Caucasian countries. I just looked through the 'Classifieds' on Arab News (online newspaper from Saudi Arabia) and found two ads soliciting suitable females for young men, where the families concerned want the bride-to-be to be 'very fair and beautiful'. This feature of the skin is desired by both Arab and Indian parents looking to get their boys hitched.

Much of this is because the slaves prevalent in the Arabian peninsular were Nubians from Upper Egypt, who were very black. So the darker your skin, the more it points to lowly status in your pedigree.

What a curiosity we humans are!

In the deep south during all the civil rights activities the segreatation policy was becoming hard to enforce, especially having rednecks in the front and the black people in the back on public transport. One day a bus driver got so fed up with the rowing and the ringing of hands that he just said "Right from now on everyone is the same colour, we`re all green, got it? Green. So, i want the light green`s at the front and the dark green`s at the back."

the bride-to-be to be 'very fair and beautiful'.
This may mean they want a wife to be unbiased in her views as well as beautiful.
