A friend of mine has a boating lake in her garden where she regularly has swans. One of these swans died last week and it's body was found by her mother (my friends, not the swans) by the side of the lake. As it was only one swan she did not need to report it to DEFRA, but there is an agency to which you have to report these swan deaths. She was told the swan was killed by a fox, although this was incorrect as someone had seen the swan dead on the water the day before so somehow the fox had managed to get the carcass to the waters edge (or of course it could have floated there) where the fox had apparently had had a good chew on it. They could tell by the ring on the swans leg that he was about 7 years old. Does any one know if this is a good age for a swan to die, and any ideas of what it could have died of? Do they suffer from heart attacks for instance?
