I notice that another female British toddler has been snatched whilst in a foreign country. This one is named Margaret Hill. Her father is an oil worker from Durham and her mother is a Nigerian. She is three years old.

The report is at the bottom of page 32 of the Irish Independent, and runs to about 45 words. Why is that I wonder?

The bias is very sad I agree. Why do some rate more coverage other than the fact that some are more photogenic?

Gareth made the point about Missing White Woman Syndrome on the Madeline thread IIRC.

(I don't know whether Margaret is white or not, but I a suspect some of the sentiment holds true)

I think there is also a (lessor) factor that people (I) are (am) getting a bit bored by the abduction story and couldn't stick another two months of it.

The Madeline McCann case has got similar coverage to that of the Soham murders and Jon-Benet Ramsey. Coincidence? I think not.

Just been on sky news, parents don't want press coverage as they are in talks with the kidnappers, it appears to be a little different to the Maddy case

Nigeria as we know is rife with corruption. It appears the kidnappers actually want the child's father in return for the safe release of the 3 year old girl. There is clearly a lot more (as Helen says) to this story.

Madeline McCann's disappearance caused mass press hysteria.

Alan Johnston was lucky in some respects as he worked for the BBC and so his kidnapping also received a great deal of press and TV coverage. He is also someones child but he put himself in a place, through his journalism, which meant he was always vunerable. Alan Johnson (for whatever reason and for whatever deals that may have been made behind the scenes )was eventually freed to return to his parents in Scotland. The Press and various governments pressure probably had a lot to do with this safe release.

Let's hope Madeline and Margaret's story also end in their safe return. If press coverage helps then so be it. In Margaret's case I am not sure it will BUT it still made the national papers. Let's face it, many missing or kidnapped children never make the national news.
