The Nation's Favourite Lyric

Some of these are desperate!! Torn between 5 and 81 - most people who will go on here won't know who they are!

"If you should ever leave me, Though life would go on believe me, The world could show nothing to me, So what good would living do me."

But my favourites weren't in the long list.

Was going to go for The Smiths but had to vote for this one because it never fails to make me smile:

"You scumbag, you maggot, you cheap lousy faggot, Happy Christmas your arse, I pray God it's our last"

And I agree, some truely awful ones listed. I'd barely put anything from the last 10 years up there.

I had to vote for Blur - I love :

I get up when I want, except on Wednesdays when I am rudely awaken by the dustmen

I couldn't vote as the best lyrics simply were not there.

"Says she Do you want some sauce on that says I, I do in my roll"

I would have liked to see either

"i'm holding out my hand but i'm alone" by Feeder

or

"I never dreamed i'd hurt you, i never dreamed i'd lose you, in my dreams im always wrong" by Mercury Rev

I'd have liked to have seen

If dreams are like movies then memories are films about ghosts Counting Crows, Mrs Potter's Lullaby

or

When everybody loves you, you can never be lonely Counting Crows, Mr Jones - a pretty poignant and quite sad line I think, really. Adam Duritz has always been one for depressing songs, being pretty messed up himself, and this song says it all really.

Couldnt agree more Dom, love Ccounting Crows and he really does compose some brilliant lyrics. I like

"I wanted to see you, walking away from me, without the sensation you're leaving me alone" Time and Time again

also

"Every time she sneezes i believe it's love" Anna begins.
This may seem a strange one but I like the concept of loving everything about someone, right down to the smallest detail

You're right about Anna Begins Mike - one of the most heart wrenching songs I've heard. I particularly like

She's talking in her sleep-it's keeping me awake
And Anna begins to toss and turn
And every word is nonsense but I understand it all

"Well, I'm not the world's most masculine man. But I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man. And so is Lola"

But the inclusion of "I should be so lucky, lucky, lucky, lucky" nearly made my boycott the whole thing.

The Rolling Stones
Sympathy For The Devil
"Please allow me to introduce myself, I'm a man of wealth and taste, I've been around for a long, long year, stole many a man's soul and faith"

Not into Damien Rice but i thought these lyrics were very good.

"Stones taught me to fly, Love, taught me to lie, Life taught me to die, So it's not hard to fall, When you float like a cannonball"

Nothing on there to match the genius that was Lorenz Hart - take this verse from "I Wish I Was In Love Again":

When love congeals
It soon reveals
The faint aroma of performing seals
he double-crossong ps a pair of heels.
I wish I were in love again!
