A good few months ago a few of us were talking about music and tv shows..think it was Euronymous who mentioned Tony Soprano..and i said..who's that?..and was told i should really know:p...so a month ago i started with first box set..have now watched 4 series of it..you were right Euronymous..i should have known:lol:

just wanted to know what you folk think in general of the series..i am totally hooked on it..in fact will be broken hearted when i seen them all:(

no spoilers now:D

i'm up to where Tony and wife have split up..they have just decided not to take Carmine out .Christopher just come out of rehab etc

this must be one of best TV series ever i would think..its superb

when i have done with it..any recommendations for another box set..i've got Alias Smith & Jones one..thats the western..not comedy by way..but its not going to fill the void is it?

The Wire?...West Wing?

Euro's choices are brill, and I'd add 'Damages' to that, although with all of its arty-farty flashbacks, it's one to concentrate on for clues, rather than lie down on the sofa with a six-pack. 'Lonesome Dove' is another great one. I absolutely adore 'Poirot' with David Suchet - he is the man! There boxes galore from various series. The films are wonderful for evoking the late 1920s thru 30s - the architecture, the cars, the clothes, and the general 'set'. Superb.

I particularly liked the 'open' ending to THE SOPRANOS, did you, EC1? Glad that it finished in a very unfinished way, if you take my meaning!

If you haven't tasted THE WIRE, you're in for a real treat, although the 'family' this time is 'the street', with lines between Good and Bad very blurred most of the time. It's nice that nowadays, you aren't signposted White Hat vs Black Hat as you used to be in police/cowboy dramas. Plenty of good on the baddies' side, plenty of scummy behaviour on the goodies' - complex and thoughtful stuff.

SPOILER ALERT FOR Desert Orchid

when i watched it..my reading was that Tony got whacked by the guy who went in the toilet..his favourite scene from the godfather was that same scene.

then i googled the ending..i couldn't believe the controversy..there is a detalied analysis of the last ten minutes if you google it by the director

basically..each time someone comes in.the bell rings and you get Tonys "view" of the door..you see what he sees..when Meadow comes in..he hears the bell..looks up and his "view" is black..and silent..cos he's dead

I'd be pretty confident you'll enjoy The West Wing. Best TV series I've ever seen.

Mrs O recently bought The Sopranos and has been raving about it. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to see any of it yet. I'll maybe borrow it and watch it between now and the summer.

I thought i were the only one never to watch it DO..but plenty at work haven't.

First six epsiodes to get you into it..they don't do anything special in those episodes but you get used to the characters..its just like a slice of their life..nothing is done purposely to draw you in if you know what i mean

you in for a treat..hopefully WW will be a treat for me too:)

don't read anything about the last episode..above:lol:

EC1, Fringe is only so so compared to stuff mentioned above. West Wing and The Wire are must have dvd boxsets. If you liked Soprano's you will love The Wire.

A bit slow out of the blocks finding your Spoiler, EC1 - that's fantastic, thanks for that. It's utterly dispelled what I thought was an ending left in limbo. Very, very clever and while the series was peppered with much extreme violence, it also contained all the subtleties of human relationships, fears, hopes, superstitions, etc. I remember the part in the series where Tony travels to Italy and one of the gangster's women is having her toenails cut by her maid. The woman carefully picks up every one of the clippings to dispose of them herself. Tony looks curious as to why she doesn't let the maid just throw them away. No, says this very sophisticated and glamorous 'modern' creature - it's because she doesn't want the maid using them in any sorcery against her! She tells Tony never to leave his hair on the barbershop floor, just in case someone wants to use it in a spell against him. You can almost hear Tony, the hard-nosed Noo Joisey thug, thinking, "And these are my roots?"

Just had to resurrect this as I have just been reading someone on Bfair forum wanting to know if its worth watching on Sky

this clip from Pine Barrens episode had me laughing again

Tony Soprano: [over the phone] It's a bad connection so I'm gonna talk fast! The guy you're looking for is an ex-commando! He killed sixteen Chechen rebels single-handed!
Paulie 'Walnuts' Gualtieri: Get the **** outta here.
Tony Soprano: Yeah. Nice, huh? He was with the Interior Ministry. Guy's like a Russian green beret. He can not come back and tell this story. You understand?
Paulie 'Walnuts' Gualtieri: I hear you.
[hangs up]
Paulie 'Walnuts' Gualtieri: You're not gonna believe this. He killed sixteen Czechoslovakians. Guy was an interior decorator.
Christopher Moltisanti: His house looked like ****.

classic :)

I miss Paulie & Christopher..two great characters

Still watching rerun as i missed much first time around. Seems even better particularly with SKY+ and Desktop to make sure I can watch when I like.

I am also watching Romanzo Criminale on Sky Arts (?) which is excellent. Very different from most gangster tales and and apparently based on real characters. With the Red Brigade, the Mori kidnap etc in the background plus a leftish cop it is well crafted and acted. Riveting stuff.

Am also watching Braquo on FX which is pure police corruption and violence in Paris with characters that make those in The Shield seem like wimps. I enjoy the atmosphere these French series bring to the TV, another example being Spiral. All smokey, black leather jacketed, and scruffy individuals totally unlike many of the smoothies in US shows.

Have gotten a tad bored by the pace of the various Scandinavian series. Too similar to each other and simply too slow for my taste

I'm watching reruns of Scrubs this month. Each to their own!

My sons watch that . I can't stand it! As you say.

I seem to enjoy the seemingly realistic criminal shows. ( plus Game of Thrones).

Boardwalk is a tad boring in the second series.

I used to hate it too but for some reason I started watching it and have been hooked since. It's senseless but funny. I watched bits of the Sopranos but once you've seen the Godfather movies everything else is a poor imatation.

Got a mate in work hooked on Soprano's. He'd never see it so I started bringing the box sets in for him. He can't watch enough.
