That era; Stranglers, Clash, Sex Pistols etc - for me the music hasn`t stood the test of time the way that the bands they were supposed to have replaced - Zep, Floyd has. Quality counts.

that era maybe lacked depth there was certainly a lot of drivel around then

but to me the clash pistols stranglers and rats were excellent but i dont think they were as you say meant as replacements for zep or floyd a different type of music in the same way rap music is not a replacement for reggae music just a development of it

the pistols rendtion of frigging in the rigging is unforgettable

At the time we would have counted the Stranglers as positive punk . They weren't pure punk but I think classification is dangerous . I think they do stand the test of time as much as the Ramones "I wanna be sedated" or "Beat on the brat " and the Stranglers always had their own style , Peaches , Duchess it wasn't all drug related just because Golden Brown was a classic they've been tarred with that.
