Winners do not come any more deserving that 11yo Galway Legend’s maiden success in the Total Produce Handicap Chase at Downpatrick today.Ridden by David Casey, the veteran gelding led after two out before running out the eight lengths winner over Westmeath Bachelor.
Afterwards winning trainer Iggy Madden, better known through his haulage company, said “I guess you could say that was a long time coming!”
He added “Galway Legend was as good as put down having broken down very badly at Kilbeggan in 2008 but I persevered with him and he came here in tip-top shape today. I was afraid of the extra rain but David (Casey) convinced me to run him here instead of leaving him off and he may now run again at Sligo next week.”
Galway Legend was racing for the 51st (including five point to points) time in his career which began in March 2003 and had failed to yield any win until now.

Great that they loved the horse enough to not just have him pts, as many might've done. But 'veteran' at 11? A mere strip of a lad compared to Sunday's 13 y.o. ALPH (came a good 2nd in a 10-strong hurdle) and KELTIC LORD, finishing a creditable 4th in the staying chase at the age of... 14! Did a lot of the early front-running, too, looking as if he was ready to take on DENMAN, bless him. Now those are what I call veterans!
