Meanwhile, rocket propulsion was streets ahead in the USA, thanks to the sterling efforts of selected Nazis like Wernher von Braun, who'd been happy to use slave labour to develop that favourite of the Blitz, the V-2 rocket. See, we're just too darn nice at times - we should've offered them their lives in exchange for their nous, as the Yanks did, and won the space race.
