Quite a few meetings today, mixed stuff.
I’ve made a deal with myself to be very choosy when looking at NH fields in the summer months. Fancy Stuff was an exception and one I had noted strongly. This one is a selection based upon the form and breeding.
Luna Run – 5.10 Ffos Las 8/1 Ew
This mare has only had five runs ever. Coincidentally, she ran in the hurdle race behind Miss Tabitha along with the famous Fancy Stuff. I thought LR ran a decent race that day and was making quiet progress towards the post. That comes as no surprise since she needs to go further than the 2m 5f that day. She’s bred to get all of 3m and today she’s given a 3m test for the first time and allotted bottom weight so I think the 8/1 I took last night looks decent value.
If you were to look at the win of Baryshnikov, three runs back, you might agree with me that you’ll seldom see more comfortable 1/2L winners. Two defeats since, yes, but still only 3Lbs lighter for that win today and just failed when second in this race last year to Cockalorum off 90 and meets that one today 2Lbs better off. Didn’t have the clearest of runs that day, either. The stable’s had four seconds and a winner in the last six so there’s hope, I think, and the price looks good enough to have an Ew pop.
Baryshnikov – 4.20 Ripon 7/1 Ew
Lastly, here’s one I noted last time out. He did look like he was going to be very close to winning on that occasion but hung his chance away to finish 5th. My feeling, and indeed my note written straight after, was that he was looking around him at the other horses up the straight and that some eyewear might well suit. They oblige today by applying the first-time blinkers. Let’s hope they work.
