That thought was going through my mind as I typed. I think the difference is that Hawk Wing's Lockinge ended up not particularly fast-run, likewise Frankel's Guineas. The latter went on to rack up higher figures both on form and on the clock whereas something clearly didn't go right for Hawk Wing (who would have been a very wide margin Derby winner without High Chaparral).

 

However, Master Minded did subsequently win big races racking up muscovite figures in the process but he seemed to lose his consistency. He was also treated for a breathing problem but ultimately seemed to lose his form at a young age, not unlike The Fellow and, I fear, Long Run.

 

Despite all that, I would have to rank him in the same breath as the best 2-milers I've seen.
