Ladbrokes, a bookie I've sponsored for a little while, has sent me a present in the shape of a magazine entitled "Close Up" -- and in it, Tom Segal gives his opinion on a few of the Cheltenham runners. What's intersting is what he has to say about Denman: "... providing he is back on song after his mishap at Newbury ... his relentless galloping will have Kauto Star under pressure a long way out. ... Kauto was brilliant at Kempton, but there is a chance that race collapsed around his ears and if he can beat an on-song Denman to land his third Gold Cup, then he will rightly be regarded as the best chaser since Arkle. Personally, I doubt it." You would surmise TS is sweet on Denman, then. But, take a look at this:

Not the kind of horse he'd bet on to win the Gold Cup ... He's against Denman?

This is what caught my eye:

Looks like a fun evening there.

I'm always deeply suspicious of bookmakers' magazines - why would they divulge anything not already in the public domain? - so I don't read any of them.

By the time of any big race Pricewise has tipped half a dozen that are running in his portfolio and has usually said apparently contradictory things about most of them. When one of the half a dozen wins the race we are reminded that in January TS said such and such about the winner at fancy odds. They omit to remind us about what he's said about the other handful, or even the same horse at a different time.

The technique Tom uses is designed to look impressive but is no more authentic than Derren Brown. Other than this I've got nothing against him...:)
