Towcester abandoned
by PA Sport staff

SUNDAY afternoon's meeting at Towcester has been abandoned due to frost.

Clerk of the course Robert Bellamy initially inspected the track at 9.30am but was forced to take another look at 11.30am.

He said: "We have abandoned following a second inspection.

"Things have been improving but there is still frost in the ground and it will not improve sufficiently in time for racing."

Market Rasen abandoned tomorrow too. Well done for cancelling it now, rather than calling for an inspection tomorrow morning, knowing that another heavy frost expected tonight. Much easier (if not very disappointing) for owners and trainers and the staff to know the day before if at all possible.

I agree.

Except for the major meetings like the Cheltenham Festival, it's better to get the decision over with, rather than keep everybody hanging on.

It can't be much fun if you've transported a horse hundreds of miles for some tinpot £2000 race only to find it's all been cancelled at the last moment.

Which is why it is good to see Warwick racecourse are contacting the owners of horses that turned up for the meeting that was subsequently abandoned after a couple of races.

Some racecourses desperately need to realise the knock on effect of their cancellations to all the staff at the stables and to the owners of the horses that then don't get a run. I don't think it is is an easy job, BUT if racecourses are subsequently punished financially and the owners expenses reimbursed it may start to hit home as to why however much revenue the racecourse may lose for the day, it is a real body blow to those what were hoping to see their horses run, especially if they have already arrived at the racetrack when the abandonment decision is called.

Hopefully Cheltenham will be absolutely fine! They cannot afford to get it wrong for so many reasons, can they. Only an earthquake should result in abandoning the meeting. :suspect: :)
