Just been planning a trip over to Maastricht to see some mates in the new year.

I can get a return train from Leeds to Maastricht with just two changes for only £100!

To fly from Leeds/Bradford to Maastricht (one change) is nearer to £200 by the time car parking charges are thrown in. Still not bad but hey.

Check-in times mean that the difference in travelling time is negligible.

I think that is fantastic. Never been a big train user but I might just have been converted.

I hate planes/airports.

When I lived in London, I had to do a ###### load of travelling back and forth to Dublin for family reasons. There were also a lot of business trips in New York and a fair few weddings and holidays on the continent.

Since March, I haven't flown, and I am going to try to minimise my flying from here on in.

That said, I am off to London the weekend after next on business. Dublin Airport doesn't agree with me.

I love trains.

I got the Trans-Siberian from Xi'an to St. Petersburg a few years ago. It took us three months to go through China, Mongolia and Russia. What I love about trains is that you actually get to see the places you are travelling through, even if you don't stop off.

The big problem with planes is the two hour pre flight check in time. I used to fly over fairly frequently to London, leaving early Friday and back late on Sunday, and you felt you had a three day trip. Doing the same thing now feels like a 1 day trip. I know you're only losing an hour and a half each way on the old regime but somehow the trip seems to take over the whole day.

Never had any problems with Dublin airport, was through the whole passport control and in Dublin city centre within about 1 3/4 hours of stepping on the plane in Liverpool.
