Yes. I now remember that while I was still working I had the reputation of being 'the guy who holds doors open for people'. A couple of female colleagues stopped one day to tell me so as I held the door open for them. When I said I presumed everyone held doors for everyone else (regardless of gender) they said no, I was the only colleague who did it. I'm not sure if they were inferring male colleague but it surprised and saddened me at the time.


I mentioned this to Mrs O. She said it's only manners and she holds doors for anyone too.


Going off-topic briefly, one of the joys of free bus travel is the politeness of people towards drivers. Maybe it's just up here where I live, but I reckon nine out of ten people say thanks to the driver as they leave the bus. That was unheard of in my younger days.
