It's a persona for sure - it was with McCririck too.

I only ever chatted to McCririck once (Newmarket July meeting in 1984 on my first visit when I asked him the way to the press box) and a gentler, kinder, more helpful bloke you couldn't wish to meet.

He went out of his way to lead me there - I take as I find and I liked him ever since, despite his many unreconstructed right-wing on-screen excesses!
