I have just bought something incredibly embarassingly sad.............................. :shy:

A TY Beanie Baby of Barbaro :what:

My only defence is that for every BB purchased a donation goes to the Barbaro fund shrug::

Just so long as you don't have conversations with it while it tells you in a child's voice how "luvvly horsie hevven" is...

Surely a beanie baby can't be made to look like a specific horse though, aren't they all rather generic looking?

Why is it sad or stupid, fudge? People buy idiotic football scarves and can't live without the new strip every year, and at enormous rip-off prices, too - just to show a pathetic, outdated tribal allegiance to a bunch of overpaid, bad-mannered morons kicking a ball about, while fighting with the opposition. (Or lynching policemen, a l'Italia.) Fancy paying good money for that sort of rubbish, and none of it goes to charity - it goes to fund even bigger transfer fees.

Very good point

I don't tend to label anything "sad" or "stupid" if someone enjoys it and it doesn't harm anyone, then it's nothing to do with me.

It was just a bloody racehorse and having been involved with many that die, its just another one. I dont know its just my opinion i just think trying to make money out of his death is great.

People are just bloody people, and we die in tens of thousands every day, fudge, but it doesn't mean we can't raise money in their name, and donate it to good causes. I don't see the difference between selling something to give a percentage to charity, whether it's in a horse or human form. And you weren't involved with BARBARO (thank God, from the sound of it), and if your attitude is that horses are just so much dead meat, I feel sorry for any in your care.

is that for every BB purchased a donation goes to the Barbaro fund

the Barbaro one has been inproduction since before his death.

I don't see your point Kev.

My daughter collects BB's and has got hundreds, good job we've got an attic room on our bungalow thats now a play room as im not one for mess.

Dont see its any worse than the Best Mate memorabilia thats been knocking about - and if a % goes to charidee then thats quite nice.

I wouldnt want one - but I do covet the Julip Red Rum figure....

One could just as easily bring Horse Racing down to such a base level.

No one in the racing game i suppose, but footballers are such an easy target. I read recently that Jonathan Ross is on 18MIL a year. That`s value for money for us license payers.

Sure, film and tv represent some high rollers, but not player after player in team after team. I suppose I find the club merchandising cynical and exploitative of people who, as the traditional bedrock of footie, aren't always best placed to afford the endless mill of new strips and promotional tosh. Do they donate anything, by the way, to provide football clubs overseas (say, in Africa) with boots and strip? Or is that always left up to Comic Relief? That would be reasonable if they did.

No im glad i wasnt involved with Barbaro because i would have told them to have put him out of his misery long before they did. And yes every horse im involved with i wish they all would die, especially long painfull deaths. :brows:

I hope your new boss reads your comments on this thread Fudge, and any prospective new owners to your new or exisiting yard. I would think that you would be better keeping some of your thoughts about horses in your care to yourself.

I knew someone would think i was being serious!!!

Well to be honest anyone who has worked with me or does will know im one of the most caring lads in racing, ive seen things that would shock many if i told you about them and being involved in many big yards have seen many horses suffer horrendous injuries, ive even held one for an hour while it died with me holding and stroking it till its last breath. So dont start giving me ###### about me not caring. I was just giving my opinion so to put me down about doing my job that i do to a very high standard is uncalled for.

That reminds me of some joke that did the rounds years ago about teaching irony to an American.

Scene: Two men, an Englishman and an American, standing outside a hotel in London waiting for a taxi in pissing rain.

Engishman : Great weather, isn't it?
American: Of course not, it's lashing rain. Why would you think that is great.
Englishman: I was being ironic.

I forget the rest but it ends up with the American saying "Great Weather" when something totally unrelated with the weather goes wrong in an attempt to be ironic. It really was hilarious.

Was it this one?

First American to grasp concept of irony
by Volker Weber

Jay Fullmer, 38, yesterday became the first American to get to grips with the concept of irony.

"It was weird" Fullmer said. "I was in London and like, talking to this guy and it was raining and he pulled a face and said, "Great weather eh?" and I thought - "Wait a minute, no way is it great weather".

Fullmer then realised that the other man's 'mistake' was in fact deliberate.

Fullmer, who is 39 next month and married with two children, aged 8 and 3, plans to use irony himself in future.

"I'm, like, using it all the time" he said. "Last weekend I was grilling steaks, and I burned them, and I said "Hey, great weather."
