Sorry for the gross subject folks

I have one of these on my leg and now my ankle is swelling to twice normal size, I am possibly going to have it removed tonight and was wondering if anyone had had this done and:

a - is it painful?
b - how long does it take to recover?

I have never had my ankle removed and would therefore be unable to comment. With regard to the second question, my experience (watching Forrest Gump) would lead me to believe that it might be quite a lengthy process.

Perhaps Dr Honest Tom can provide more information?

My sister had to have one removed last year, she developed it during her pregnancy, she was a bit sore for a few days & was told to allow 3/4 days of pottering about & that was it, no problems, she took ordinary ibuprofen tablets
Hope that helps :)

Best wishes for the op!

It's not painful Ovverbruv. I had one removed from my leg about 18 months ago. Not had it done from the ankle so procedure may be different.

They put you under general anaesthetic (well they did for me) and make various slits in your leg (the main one is at the back of the knee. Might need to have part/all of your leg in a bandage for a few days and avoid all sporting activity for 6 weeks (though in my experience 5 or 6 days should suffice).

Good Luck if you're having the op tonight (very quick down south as I had to wait nearly 4 years before they scheduled it)

Why are such young men getting very close veins? I thought you were all fit and bursting with energy and good circulation? It's supposed to be us oldies going to have them stripped. Anyway, best of luck, o/b. No idea on the techie stuff - your doctor should've advised you, though.

I developed mine when I was 17 and at the time I didn't smoke (still don't) and didn't drink heavily (debatable given I was at Uni for 3 years) Kri, the doctor was as confused as anyone when I went in and told her the problem and referred me to the specialist.

You been through all the various clinics OB? You'll probably know all the stuff above anyway but it's nothing to worry about at all, just a routine operation. 75% success rate too I think.

My aunt has had quite a few varicose veins stripped from her legs & she says it hurt like hell  It was a few years ago now though!

I had both my legs done in the pioneer stages I think???? about 20 yrs ago!! I stood up and each bulbus vein(6 per leg) was injected and the blood drawn off no pain killer of any description administered.

I was then bandaged and discharged all this as an out patient, it worked on the right leg but not the left leg as its as really as bad as ever now, and causes me a lot of pain & swelling regularly too.........

Good luck Mike I'm sure it will be done more civil than mine was.........

I was in overnight - to say the nurses were giving out drugs like smarties was an understatement. Think I was rattling when I came home, boxes of copake and cocodamol etc.

Finally stripped it out last night, got to hospital at 7:30am as instructed and finally went in to surgery at 15:45 starving hungry!!!

Got kept in overnight but all is well now, a bit of pain but wont need any pills (us men have a high tolerance for pain!!!!!). Just have to walk around a little bit every day.

Ahh, one of my favourite jokes:

Doc: So what's the matter with you?

Patient: Doctor, it's the ol' ham & eggs.

Doc: I'm sorry?

Patient: The ham & eggs... the legs! My legs are playing up something awful.

Doc: Oh, the ham & eggs... I get it! Tell me, do you have varicose veins?

Patient: Sure, Doc, a boy and a girl!

One downside is that I have been hiccuping for more than 12 hours now, according to the nurse it is a known side effect of general anaesthetics, bloody annoying though!!
