Last weekend was our retired taxman`s groups annual jolly boys outing, this time to the lovely city of Prague. Funded, in part by our so-generous index-linked pensions:D....for which we thank all you hard working folk whose taxes fund all this:).

The weekend started so well with both our teams winning. Liverpool beating that awful Chelsea team and the, err, champions elect, Everton, comfortably beating the mighty M`boro:).

On the Sunday we visited the nearest racecourse to Prague which is Velka Chuchle. And what a great and value for money experience it was. For the equivalent of about £22 we got a race card and glass of bubbly on arrival, a delicious 3 course meal, and the exclusive waitress service of a lovely and so-pleasant Czech girl. Being Scousers we do like a drink or two (we did sup some stuff over the weekend!) but the total drinks bill for all 8 of us left quite a bit of change out of about £60!! Nearly the cost of a single round over here!! Not bad for 5 hours steady, and not so steady, imbibing:).

One humorous and slightly surreal event occurred when another of those lovely, leggy, blonde Czech girls came over to our table and asked if we were Irish. She thought our accents had an Irish tang. And she asked with perfect English, but she, herself, had a lovely Irish accent. Apparently, she`d worked for 5 years in Cork. She even knew the correct Irish response when one of the lads wished "the top o` the morning to ye."

A lovely day but not one of us made a profit on the day`s racing;)....we can only blame the Czech beer and the lovely Czech girls:<3:....I can thoroughly recommend Prague and Velka Chuchle.

Glad you enjoyed it Dan - paid my first visit to Velka Chuchle back in early June and have a share in a filly over there.

Lovely course, and there's a few ex-pat regulars over there and hopefully you spotted the illegal bookmakers perched at various ends of the bar (up the steps from the parade ring).

Well worth a visit to Pardubice (going again in a fortnight) if you guys fancy a return visit to the Czech Republic, also Lysa-Nad-Ladem is a small picturesque track that races during the Summer not far from Prague too.

European Jockey's Cup this week also, the richest days racing in Czech history.

It was a flat meeting, grassy, with an 8 race card of 6 handicaps and two 2 y o races.

We didn`t spot the illegal bookies, Martin. It was the first time I`ve seen a Tote system, though, were you could take a fixed price. And it was nice to see the polite applause of the crowd as the field passed the stands.

Ah they're older chaps and a throwback from the taxation days when you had to pay 5 crowns in every 100 to the Tote system.

The bookmaker there is Bettino so it's actually more of a monopoly than a Tote - the forecasts/tricasts are Tote based but you should get the price it is when you back it if placing a bet at the windows.

The hurdles track at Prague is on the inside of the track, as is the trotting track.

On a similar note entries are out for the whole of the Velka Pardubicka card - Vinga & Bless The Wings are both overseas runners and unlikely starters. Charme Look would have a strong chance IMHO with him helping Barbora Malkova become the first girl to ride a top level winner over jumps in the country at this meeting last year, unfortunately she's out injured for the 2016 Velka.
